Listen to WUWM-FM (89.7), Lake Effect, interview with Dan Idzikowski, Assistant Dean for Public Service at Marquette Law School, and Jeff Kremers, Chief Judge for Milwaukee County, discusing the Milwaukee Community Justice Council in view of the Law School's annual public service conference on the future of community justice in Wisconsin.

In the past two years, policymakers and community leaders in Wisconsin have devoted much attention to a range of important challenges facing the state's criminal justice system, including perceptions of unwarranted race-based disparities, budgetary pressures, an increase in the state's prison population, the dearth of treatment options, and the desire to engage affected communities in crime-prevention initiatives. Local community justice councils have been developed to address these concerns, promote cooperation across jurisdictional lines, and facilitate creative problem-solving.

The 2009 Marquette University Law School Public Service Conference focused on the efforts of these community justice organizations: How can they bridge longstanding political, cultural, and jurisdictional divides? What are the most pressing criminal justice policy questions they face? What innovative responses are being considered? How can community-based organizations learn from one another and from the experiences of other communities across the nation?
