Biography:
Prior to joining the faculty in 1993, Professor Barnes served as senior policy analyst for the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging and the George Washington University Health Policy Project. In 1990 she was appointed Scholar in Residence by the Health Law Institute at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and a visiting faculty member at Temple University College of Law. During four years in residence at the University of Florida College of Law Public Policy Project, she served as Chairperson for the Florida Bar Committee on the Elderly and Vice Chair of the Commission on the Elderly. From 1997 to 2002, Barnes was chair of the ABA Real Property Probate and Trust Law Section Committee on Guardianship and Alternatives, and in 2001 she served as chair of the AALS Section on Aging and the Law. Professor Barnes has written extensively in areas of aging law and policy, including the first law text in the field, entitled Elder Law. She is also co-author and editor of Counseling Older Clients and the Health Law Desk Reference (American Bar Association/American Law Institute). She founded and is faculty advisor of the law review Elder's Advisor. She teaches and develops curriculum in health law and aging law and policy, and is faculty sponsor for the Health Law Society.
In Spring 2003, Professor Barnes was the Libra Visiting Professor at the University of Maine School of Law; in Spring 2007, she will teach elder law at the University of Miami School of Law.
