Criminal Law, Criminal Process, and the Judicial Internship

Biography:
Professor Hammer joined the Law School faculty in 1981 and teaches Criminal Law, Criminal Process, the Constitution and Criminal Investigation, and the Judicial Internship. Prior to his appointment to the faculty, he was an Assistant District Attorney for Milwaukee County and the Assistant Director of the Statewide Prosecutor Education and Training Program. In 1996-97 Professor Hammer served as a member of the Task Force on Corrections, which was appointed by the Wisconsin Governor to study sentencing and prison overcrowding. In 1998-99 Professor Hammer was a member and the reporter for the Wisconsin Criminal Penalties Study Committee, which was created by the Legislature to develop legislation and make recommendations for the implementation of truth-and-sentencing for Wisconsin. He is also a member of the Wisconsin Judicial Council's Criminal Procedure Subcommittee, which is examining the Criminal Procedure Code and will be making recommendations for its reform. Professor Hammer has published books and articles on criminal law and motor vehicle law and he is a frequent speaker on those subjects. He served as the Law School's Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1994-97 and, since 2001, as the Director of Clinical Education. Professor Hammer is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Special Recognitions:
In 2004 Professor Hammer received the Robert and Mary Gettel Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence (an award conferred annually by Marquette University).
