Association of Women In Law
“Women can use their abilities to support each other; …they will not advance except by joining together in cooperative action.”
-Jean Baker Miller
What is AWL?
AWL is a service organization open to all members of the law school community. This organization is dedicated to improving the environment for female and male students at Marquette University Law School, in the legal community, and in the community at large.
Why Join AWL?
AWL often has the highest number of members out of any other organization at the law school. We achieve our goals through various professional, service and social events that are held throughout the year. AWL offers members a chance to improve their networking skills, interact with members of the legal community, and learn about issues facing women in law school and beyond in order to make them better prepared for entering the work force. AWL also fosters an environment for creating friendships through many fun and exciting social events.
Service
The Association of Women in Law is primarily a service organization that is dedicated to improving the environment for women in the community at large. AWL promotes the mission of Marquette University Law School – to serve those who need our assistance. AWL holds a number of service events throughout the year, including:
- Canned Immunity; a canned food drive to help the Hunger Task Force during Thanksgiving
- Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale; all proceedings go to benefit the Susan Komen Foundation
- House of Peace Clothing Drive; gently used clothing donated to those in need
- Donating time at a Women’s Shelter for Battered and Abused Women
- Volunteering at Women Judge’s Night; students pin roses on Judges who are being honored during this annual fundraiser.
Professional
The Association of Women in Law provides many opportunities to network with professionals from the legal community in Milwaukee. By pairing with the Milwaukee chapter of AWL, made up of female legal professionals, we are able to give our members the ability to meet with and develop relationships with these professionals.
The signature event for AWL is the Mentoring Event, a 3-night event that brings law students and Milwaukee AWL attorneys together to meet each other and discuss their respective interests. Our members will be introduced to the concept of mentoring and then have a chance to find their own mentor within the legal community, all facilitated by our organization.
In addition, AWL invites attorneys to have lunch with our members and speak about their experiences regarding proper etiquette, work-life balance, what they wish they knew in law school, and much more!
Social
The Association of Women in Law believes that it is important for women in the legal field to develop meaningful relationships with each other that will last far beyond law school. Having allies in the legal community is extremely important, especially in what is still regarded as a male dominated field. AWL provides many opportunities for our members to socialize with each other, including:
- Brewer’s Games and Tailgates with the Sports Law Society
- Buck’s Games
- Wine Tasting
- Brewery Tours
- Ladies Night Out at Lucille’s Dueling Piano Bar
- And many more!
