Welcome to the Out and Allies Legal Society at Marquette University Law School.
Fairness
There remain many legal barriers in the struggle for civil rights for LGBT Americans. Like most civil rights issues, the fundamental question is one of fairness. Fairness is a promise that all people will be treated equally. Regardless of status in society, we have a right to be treated as an individual. Unfortunately, may current laws unfairly impact LGBT people on a variety of fronts including: relationships and parenting, tax implications, inheritance, health care decisions, military service, and discrimination.
Awareness
Law students, whether LGBT or straight, will encounter clients, colleagues, judges, and jurors during their legal careers who are LGBT. Gaining an awareness of the issues and challenges faced by LGBT people will make attorneys more effective in their advocacy. Awareness is also the first step in remedying the inequity surrounding LGBT issues.
Community
People identify and define themselves by community. As Marquette law students, we are citizens of many communities. Out and Allies is building a new community, one based on understanding, belonging, and trust.
Marquette Law School Out & Allies Legal Society
We encourage law students to promote fairness regardless of sexual orientation. We advocate for LGBT perspectives in legal studies, we provide a support network for LGBT students during their law school career, and we also provide academic, professional and social events for all students.
We believe that such participation will ultimately make us better lawyers and better people.
