Sports Law Career Resources for Law Students and Alums

The following internet sites were compiled by the National Sports Law Institute as a service primarily to students and alums of the Sports Law Program at Marquette University Law School. The sites are separated into three distinct areas; free sites, subscription based sites, and executive training sites. The National Sports Law Institute does not endorse any particular site, instead it provides them as a service to users of this webpage.

Free Job Search Sites

Athletic Business
Use: This site allows users to search their Jobs Available section at no cost. Job postings include very brief descriptions, date the job posting will expire, and contact information. Some postings may also include salary information. Users may take advantage of the Jobs Wanted section at no cost. Here job seekers can post their ideal job description for employers to see and contact them.

Chronicle of Higher Education- Careers
Use: Select the Search tab. Users must keyword search for jobs; a good search is "sport*athletic."Using the "match any word"option will return results from athletic trainer to coordinator of athletic development. Under the advanced search users may also narrow the area and radius of location and the job type.

Disney Sports Graduate Intern Program
Use: An inclusive environment for graduate students, which centers on a variety of business practices in operating a sports complex. Program offered only to students currently enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral degree program at an accredited college or university. Disney Sports Attractions, Inc. and its affiliates have numerous responsibilities that contribute to the success of their athletic events. Responsibilities include: programming, event management, marketing, merchandise, sponsorship and facility operations at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, as well as business planning and development for future growth of the complex and the sports business at the Walt Disney World Resort.

FindLaw Career Center
Use: Users can search for a job by type (attorney, intern, clerk, etc.), location (by state or region), and/or practice area (Sports Law). (Example: All Job Types + All Locations + Sports Law= 5 results. Other practice areas that are connected with Sports Law include Entertainment Law and Leisure Law.) Search results are brief paragraph descriptions which you can click on to get a more detailed description of the job position including qualifications, how to apply, who the employer is, what their website is, and a brief description about them. If you scroll down past the job search boxes there is a candidate resource center which gives you links to job search directories/legal recruiters, salary charts, and other companies that provide hiring contacts (Hiretrends, Lawcrossing, etc.). The Outplacement Center link offers articles on managing and planning your career, targeted resume mailings (done for a fee), and you can submit anonymous questions to experts in the law field.

Higher Education Jobs
Use: This site allows users to search jobs in higher education. Users can narrow their search by category by choosing administrative, faculty, or executive. Users can also narrow their search by location by choosing a state, country, or institution. Users can also do a keyword search to find sports related jobs.

IAAM Career Opportunities
Use: The site has a list of positions available managing or coordinating arenas and facilities across the country. Click on the job title and the site pulls up a description about the job, qualifications required, hours, salary, what application materials are required, an address to send resumes to, and contact information if you have more questions regarding the position. Along the top heading there is also a tab called Positions Sought where you can post your resume, for free, so that employers can contact you. The News tab provides a list of up-coming conferences and contact information if you would like to attend one. The internship tab provides a list of available internships their descriptions, and qualifications.

LawInfo
Use: The left hand side of the site has a Job Seekers link that allows visitors to create a free account and post their resume. On the right hand side visitors can search for a job using either a category (attorney, intern, law school staff, legal research, etc.) and/or a state. Click on the advanced search option for a more detailed search page where you can also select job types (contract, full-time, part-time) or keyword search. If you find a job posting and want to know more about the employer who posted it, you can click on the Company Profile tab and find contact information for the company there. The home page also has links at the bottom for a "featured employer."

National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics
Use: Users can search for jobs using the fifteen listed categories ranging from internships to athletic director to compliance. When you pull up the listings for each category the date the listing was posted is shown along with the school name and official job title. If you click on the title you will pull up a full description of the position along with qualifications and contact information. Some postings also include salary information.

NCAA Marketplace
Use: The normal search option allows you to choose a region of the United States and search the market for jobs in collegiate athletics. Job postings include a full description of the position, qualifications required, what materials must be sent and an address, contact information if you have questions, and salary information (not all jobs have salary quotes). The advanced search option allows you to search by both region and category. There are 85 categories to select from including Commissioner, Compliance Coordinator, Football, Sports Information, Fund Raising, etc. The advanced search also allows you to select a level: mens, womens, head, assistant, etc. If you want to see all the jobs in a category regardless of region, go to the normal search box and scroll down past the U.S. Regions picture. The categories are all listed with a number in parentheses behind each category representing how many jobs are available in that area. You can click on the category and see all the postings for that job position nation wide.

Online Sports Careers Center
Use: This site has a small Job Bank with open positions in the sports industry. The listings are fully detailed and include contact information and qualifications. Most of the jobs posted on this site deal with sales and marketing or advertising. From this site you can link to JobsInSports.com (described below) and sign up for their job services.

Teamwork Online
Use: Job links are listed down the left hand side of the site by league or company. Examples of employers include the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS, Arena Football (af2), Mandalay Sports Entertainment, TeamWork Consulting, etc. (Jobs posted on this site automatically include jobs from sites such as nbajobs.com and baseballjobs.com) Each link has eleven different categories for job openings ranging from legal, to internships, to sales& marketing or administration. Next to each category that has job postings is a green tab that says open. For all open categories you can click on the open symbol and link to full descriptions of the openings. Job descriptions include basic details of the position, location of the job, hours, salary, qualification, relocation and housing information, and information on benefits. To apply for a job posting you will be asked to create an account (at no cost) which requires you to fill out a general information page about yourself and attach a resume. You can use your account e-mail and password to apply for job postings in the future. Contact: General questions

USOC Jobs
Use: This site allows users to search USOC job listings, Olympic Sport Jobs (National Governing Bodies), and USOC Internships. The USOC and Olympic Sport job postings include descriptions, conditions and minimum qualifications. The USOC internship job postings include information about what internships are offered and the deadlines for each internship.

Subscription Based Sites

College Sports Careers
Use: This site is an online job board for college athletics. Users may search for jobs using keywords, job title, employer, and location. Users may also post their resumes on the website. College athletic departments use the site to post jobs as well as search the posted resumes.

Executive Sports Placement
Use: The website offers four services: job opportunities, placement services, resume services, and career counseling. The site states that 84% of people who use all four services get at least an interview. Job opportunity listings are updated daily and there are usually between 50 and 100 jobs at a time. Job listings include brief descriptions of the positions and salary information. Positions are available with both Major and Minor League teams, sports marketing agencies, colleges and universities, and corporations with sports marketing divisions. There is also a Sample Jobs tab for non-members to see a sample job posting.

Professional Baseball Employment Opportunities
Use:This website is the official employment service for Minor League Baseball. It is the only Baseball specific job site available. The user cannot actively search for jobs as a member, but instead is matched with jobs that fit his or her criteria. Membership includes auto-notification of new job postings, monthly newsletter, information and discounts on job fairs, and a member profile that describes your relevant information and includes your resume and cover letter. There is a sample area available which provides a sample newsletter, tips, articles, and job postings.

Sports Agent Directory
Use: For $54.95, users gain access to Professional Sports Agents Directory containing contact information for over 3,000 professional sports agents. The site also provides its top sports agent profiles and draft picks from that year. In addition, a link takes users to news stories pertaining to sports agents.

Sports Careers
Use: With a free basic membership, users can post their resumes, view sports jobs listings abstracts, and subscribe to weekly e-mail alerts. New Virtual Sports Career Fair feature provides paid members with insider tips and guidance from career experts and live chat room sessions with employers.

Sports Career Finder
Use: The site gives users a list of sport career categories that appear on the left side of the page. By clicking on a category, users are led to detailed descriptions of various jobs that qualify under the sports area. For example, clicking on the College Sports Jobs tab leads to a list of nine types of jobs in the college field, including Athletic Director, Director of Compliance, and Director of Marketing, with descriptions about each. Members have access to more detailed description, which include pay information and educational requirements. In addition, members have access to the Job Center, which includes employer profiles. Furthermore, members and non-members alike may sign up for a free sports job newsletter that includes sports business news, tips on finding a career in sports, and interviews with people in sports.

Women In Sports Careers Foundation
Use: In order to search the jobs database you will have to subscribe to the Womens Sports Jobs website (listed below). Members of the Foundation have access to the job database for a year, are able to post their resume for free, have access to Women's Sports Wire (sports news and information), and have access to the online career center for athlete and professional profiles, career advice, and career management.

Womens Sports Jobs
Use: Non-members may post their resume and search jobs and internships of the week. Subscription to the service allows users to search the job database which is updated daily. Non-subscribers can view the Events tab and browse through upcoming conferences, convention, and women sports events. Non-subscribers can also use the Career Counseling tab. This link allows users to make appointments for one-on-one career consultations or seminars and sign up for resume preparation consultations. There are fees for the seminars and consultations. Fees for these services are reduced by signing up for the site Membership program which includes a 25% discount on career services, one-year access to the job database, an online newsletter, and two free subscriptions to women's sports and business magazines. If you just want to find out about certain job positions in the sports field, you can click on the Network Club tab at the top, then click on job profiles, and pick an area. This link lets you find out what certain positions entail- for example, what is a Senior Women's Administrator and what do they do.

Work In Sports
Use: This site has features for both subscribers and non-subscribers. Subscribers are able to search the site's job database which has over 1,000 listings. Subscribers are also able to post their resume for free and have access to contact information for over 300 key contacts in 22 leagues and sports-related companies. Non-subscribers are able to view and apply for the featured job of the week which is listed on the homepage. Non-subscribers can also read the featured article, sign up for the free newsletter, and browse the site's calendar of events under the resource link at the bottom of the page. Visitors to the site can click on the List of Employers tab and see who is using or has used the site to hire employees.

Executive Training Sites

Game Face Inc.
Use: Game Face Inc. is a leading international sports sales training and career placement company whose clients include Major and Minor League teams, intercollegiate athletics, and international corporations. The Game Face program is a twelve-week academy that teaches sales principles and practices. The academy offers opportunities to represent real clients on a live campaign, developing skills for the sports marketplace. The academy guarantees its graduates that they will receive a job offer within 90 days of graduation. The first ten weeks of the program can be done at home and the last two weeks are at the company's headquarters in Tualatin, Oregon (housing packages with Embassy Suites available). Not all applicants are accepted into the academy, an application is available online and consists of three parts: general information, references, and a short essay. Use: This site is an agent affiliate program that trains people who want to become professional sports agents. The course addresses the role of a sports agent, sports agent rules, regulations, agent registration, agent certification, player signing, collective bargaining agreements, player contracts, league issues, and professional athlete services, and it provides a basis for understanding the development and governance of the sports agent industry and ethical dimensions of the sports agent industry. The course is a twelve-week online program. Once you pass the initial course you are eligible to take part in the agent affiliate program at no additional cost. This program gives participants the opportunity to have their own virtual sports agency with a web presence at ProSportsGroups.net, and allows them to work with as many sports as they like and gives them exposure to potential clients. Any income participants earn from the program is theirs to keep.
