Computer Maintenance and Support

It is important to perform regular maintenance to keep your computer in optimal condition.

Firewall
A firewall is a security feature for your computer that restricts access and the flow of information to the computer when you are connected to a network or the Internet. Without a firewall your computer is vulnerable to an attack that may delete files or steal personal information. Computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 should have the Windows firewall turned on by default. To verify that the firewall is on or to turn it on, follow these steps:


  1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

  2. In the control panel, click Windows Security Center.

  3. Click Windows Firewall.

  4. In the General Tab make sure the ON button is selected.

Anti-Virus Software
Anti-Virus software helps protect your computer from viruses that may infect the computer and access personal information, delete files, or use your computer to attack other computers. Viruses are commonly spread through email attachments and Internet downloads. By running anti-virus software and updating it regularly, you lower the risk of your computer becoming infected. Marquette University offers a free anti-virus program, McAfee VirusScan, to all students. You can download the software from CheckMarq.


Software Updates
Keeping your software up-to-date is important for the health of your computer. Your anti-virus software should be updated regularly, every month or so. Other programs such as Windows and Microsoft Office should also be kept up-to-date.

General Support
What the Media and Technology Group can do for you:

1. Email account support
2. Provide support for network connectivity, anti-spyware software, and anti-virus software.
3. Assist with software, related to your educational needs.
4. Provide training and support if using audio-visual equipment.
5. Direct you to the proper support for any hardware related problems.

What the Media and Technology Group Cannot do for You:

1. We cannot provide off-campus Internet access.
2. We cannot be responsible for problems related to Internet connectivity that are caused by system malfunctions outside of the Marqnet domain.
3. Software support is only provided for network connectivity, anti-spyware software, and anti-virus software. We cannot provide any hardware support due to licensing and warranty restrictions. For hardware and other software support, students should contact their computer manufacturers or a local area service provider.
