Our faculty members who teach litigation related courses are highly accomplished and well-respected. All have practical litigation experience.

Daniel D. BlinkaDaniel D. Blinka (Evidence, Advanced Evidence, Trial Advocacy, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure): Professor Blinka, a former assistant district attorney for Milwaukee County, has authored books on evidence law and criminal procedure. Wisconsin courts frequently rely on his work, often citing it in their opinions. He and Professor Thomas Hammer write the monthly Supreme Court Digest and Court of Appeals Digest for The Wisconsin Lawyer magazine. James D. GhiardiJames D. Ghiardi (Professor Emeritus): Professor Ghiardi has authored many legal articles and is a co-author of a two-volume work, Punitive Damages: Law & Practice. Professor Ghiardi received teaching awards from the law school and Marquette University, and was awarded a Distinguished Professor award from the American Bar Association Tort and Insurance Practice Session, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Milwaukee Bar Association.

Melissa L. GreippMelissa L. Greipp (Appellate Advocacy): Professor Greipp worked as a civil litigator in private practice. She co-authored the "Wrongful Death" chapter in Wisconsin Law of Damages (2004). Professor Greipp was a law clerk to Justice N. Patrick Crooks of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Jay E. GrenigJay E. Grenig (Civil Procedure, Federal Civil Litigation): Professor Grenig was in private practice in California before beginning his teaching career. He is a member of the Wisconsin Judicial Council and the reporter for the Local Rules and Practice Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. He has written a number of legal articles and books, including co-authoring the Handbook of Federal Discovery and Disclosure.

Thomas J. HammerThomas J. Hammer (Criminal Law, Criminal Process, Judicial Internship Program): Professor Hammer, a former assistant district attorney for Milwaukee County and the Assistant Director of the Statewide Prosecutor Education and Training Program, is a frequent writer and speaker on topics of criminal law and motor vehicle law. He was a member and the reporter for the Wisconsin Criminal Penalties Study Committee, which was created by the Wisconsin Legislature to develop legislation and make recommendations to implement truth-in-sentencing in Wisconsin. Professor Hammer also received a teaching award from Marquette University.

Joseph D. KearneyJoseph D. Kearney (Civil Procedure, Advanced Civil Procedure, Federal Courts, The Supreme Court): Besides serving as the dean of the law school, Dean Kearney teaches courses in civil procedure. Before coming to Marquette Law School, Dean Kearney practiced law for six years at Chicago's largest law firm. He has argued cases before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Illinois Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has also been the primary drafter of winning briefs on the merits in the United States Supreme Court. His scholarly articles have appeared in numerous law journals. He also served as a law clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge Diamuid F. O'Scannlain, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. John J. KircherJohn J. Kircher (Torts, Advanced Torts, Insurance, Products Liability): Professor Kircher practiced law with an insurance defense firm for three years, then spent the next fourteen years at the Defense Research Institute, a think-tank for attorneys who defend insurance and other tort cases. He is an editor of the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel Quarterly and a co-author of the two-volume work, Punitive Damages: Law & Practice. Professor Kircher has received teaching awards from the law school, and an award from the American Bar Association's Tort and Insurance Practice Section. Professor Kircher serves as a consultant on tort and insurance cases.

Scott A. MossScott A. Moss (Federal Class Actions & Multiple Plaintiff Litigation): Professor Moss spent five years as a plaintiff-side employment lawyer at a New York City law firm, representing employees in individual and class action lawsuits involving discrimination, harassment and wage claims. He also represented low-income workers at unemployment benefits hearings and federal court mediations. He has published many scholarly articles and contributed to legal books, and has often given media interviews on various legal/judicial topics. Professor Moss was a law clerk for Judge Constance Baker Motley, United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Michael M. O'HearMichael M. O'Hear (Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Sentencing, Post-Conviction Remedies and Prisoner's Rights): Professor O'Hear practiced law at a Chicago firm for three years, focusing on white-collar criminal law, commercial litigation and environmental law. He is the editor The Federal Sentencing Reporter and author of several scholarly articles, many on federal sentencing. Professor O'Hear has been working for an Alabama death row inmate in post-conviction proceedings since 1997. He was also a law clerk for Judge Janet Bond Arterton, United States District Court, District of Connecticut.

Gregory J. O'MearaGregory J. O'Meara, S.J. (Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Advanced Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Professional Responsibility): Professor O'Meara was an assistant district attorney in Milwaukee County and a lead prosecutor in the trial of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Chad OldfatherChad Oldfather (Civil Procedure): Professor Oldfather has litigated both criminal and civil cases in Minnesota, several of which were argued before the Minnesota Supreme Court. As a practicing attorney, Professor Oldfather was named a "Super Lawyer" by the Minnesota Journal of Law & Politics in 2000. As a legal scholar, he was awarded the Howard B. Eisenberg Prize by the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers for having published the best article on appellate process in 2003-04. Professor Oldfather served as a law clerk to Judge Jane R. Roth, United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Jessica E. PriceJessica E. Price (Appellate Advocacy): Professor Price worked in the litigation department at Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee before joining the faculty at Marquette University Law School. She has been representing an Ethiopian asylum seeker pro bono since 2003. She also was a law clerk to Justice Jon P. Wilcox, Wisconsin Supreme Court. Find out more information Link


Professor Andrea Schneider (Dispute Resolution, Negotiation) regularly conducts negotiation and mediation training for law firms, bar associations, court systems and companies around the country. She has been recognized by the College of Civil Trial Mediation for an outstanding achievement award when she served as the national coordinator for the American Bar Association Law Student Representation in Mediation Competition.

Shirley A. WiegandShirley A. Wiegand (Civil Procedure, Remedies, Conflict of Laws): Professor Wiegand has written a number of articles, many involving conflicts of law. Prior to her teaching career, she worked as a civil litigator in private practice in Kentucky for five years. She is a volunteer attorney for Legal Action, Milwaukee, and serves on the Advisory Board of the American Civil Liberties Union's Youth and Civil Liberties Council. Find out more information Link
