Access & Reference

Library Access Your Marquette Student ID card is used to check out Library and Reserve materials as well as to operate the turnstiles at the library entrance. After 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends, use your card to unlock the exterior doors of the building.

If you need to use an elevator, please ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance.

Reference Services The Reference staff provides assistance in planning research strategy and using the resources in the Library. They will answer questions about online databases, including the Internet, BNA, HeinOnline, Lexis, LoisLaw, Westlaw, and MARQCAT, the University's online catalog, as well as traditional print sources. Reference Librarians are available for individual research consultations and can recommend ways to begin a new research project. Stop by with your questions or call 288-3837.

E-Reference - We offer reference service via e-mail during regular reference hours and provide an initial response to inquiries within 24 hours. Priority is given to those affiliated with Marquette University.

Research & Computer Facilities

Laptop and Wireless Network Card Checkout A limited number of laptops are available for loan and can be checked out for 4 days. Wireless network cards are also available for a 24-hour loan to students who carry their own laptops.

Computer Labs The Law Library has two computer labs: the Miller Classroom, which also serves as a computer classroom, is located in Room 018 near the Multimedia area; the other computer lab is located in Room 010 on the Lower Level. Other computers for student use are located in the large study area in the upper floor. The labs are reserved for use by law students only, and provide access to online databases, word processing, and the Internet. Each student is assigned a unique login name and password to access the network. Labs are open during all Library hours. Locate the labs on the library map. Students can log into the network by using their Emarq username and password.

BNA, HeinOnline, LexisNexis, LoisLaw and Westlaw The Law School has contracted with several online providers to give law students, staff and faculty access to their databases. Our educational institution contract restricts use of BNA, Lexis and Westlaw to research related to academic activities, such as research for classes, job searches or scholarly research projects. HeinOnline and LoisLaw may be used for any purpose. If you have any questions about whether a project is within the scope of the contract, please stop by the Reference Desk for a consultation.

CALI - Computer Assisted Legal Instruction The Law School is a member of the Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction, which provides computer-based exercises in many law school subjects such as criminal law, evidence, and civil procedure. The exercises can be downloaded from the CALI site at http://www.cali.org Please contact the Circulation Desk (288-7092) for the password.

Interdisciplinary Research A large number of non-law research sources, including article indexes, full text ejournals, ebooks, and other resources, are available electronically through the Marquette Online Research Environment MORE and funded through Marquette's Raynor Memorial Libraries.

Borrowing & Circulation Policies

Loan Periods The Law Library loans single volume monographs to all members of the Marquette University community. Multi-volume treatises, case reporters, statutes, and periodicals do not circulate outside the Library. Law students can check out all circulating books for a two-week period. Reserve materials are available at the Circulation Desk for a two-hour loan. Videotapes in our collection of law-related videos have a three-day loan.

Renewals You may renew materials if they are not overdue and have not been placed on hold by another patron. Renew in person, by phone ((414) 288-7092), or online through MARQCAT, by logging in under "My Account." Materials may be renewed three times before they must be returned to the library.

Fines and Overdue Materials Fines are charged for all items that are not returned on time. Patrons with overdue items may not renew books or check out other materials until the overdue materials are returned and the fines are paid. Unpaid bills are turned over to the Bursar's Office.

Interlibrary Loan Services The library can obtain materials we do not own or request photocopies from other libraries. There is no charge to law students for requests related to academic research. Request forms are available at the Circulation Desk or online. If your request relates to a project for an outside employer, please ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.

Finding Materials

Catalog MARQCAT is the online catalog for all Marquette University libraries. Terminals are located throughout the library. You may search by author's name, book or periodical title, word, subject, or call number. You may also search MARQCAT from home at: http://libus.csd.mu.edu

Reserve Our law faculty places course material on Reserve, including lecture notes, exams, journal articles, and book chapters. These are available in print at the Circulation Desk and on our electronic reserve documents whenever possible.

Frequently used items and Wisconsin practice materials including CLEs and formbooks are also kept on Reserve.

Periodicals Periodicals are located on the Upper level shelved in alphabetical order. Subject access to journal articles is gained through LegalTrac, an online index available via MARQCAT, and also through two paper index sets: Current Law Index and Index to Legal Periodicals. The paper indexes are located on the Upper level of the Library.
