Each year, over a half-million Wisconsin residents are forced to confront legal problems without any legal assistance. Legal assistance organizations work tirelessly to bridge this sort of gap, but the need persists.
The Public Interest Law Society is determined to help. The proceeds from the PILS Auction provide eager law students support to spend their summer working in a public interest or government agency. Last year, 15 students received fellowships and helped provide legal services to hundreds of clients. This year, our goal is to provide 20 fellowships to law students who are willing to help.
Please help us reach our goal.
"DO WELL AND DO GOOD"
Howard B. Eisenberg
Dean and Professor of Law
(1995–2002)
The auction is named in memory of Howard B. Eisenberg, Dean of the Law School from 1995 until 2002. Dean Eisenberg's distinguished career brought him many awards and honors, but he remained dedicated to providing legal services to people in need. He corresponded with hundreds of prisoners (his "pen pals") who asked him for legal advice; took appellate cases on a pro bono basis; and was a leader in efforts to end elder abuse. Dean Eisenberg was a role model not only for attorneys and students but for everyone. He encouraged law students to "do well and do good."
In the past five years, more than 70 students received PILS Fellowships.
PILS Fellows have provided more than 26,000 hours of legal services to public interest or government organizations just in the last five years.
PILS Fellows have worked in more than 40 different public interest or government organizations, including Centro Legal, the ACLU of Wisconsin, the Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee, Catholic Charities Immigration Project, the Eritrea Ethiopia Boundary and Claims Commission in Eritrea, East Africa, and the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.
PILS fellows have worked in more than 15 different cities and countries, including Milwaukee, Chicago, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Chile, Peru, Yugoslavia,
England, and Eritrea.
