The Co-chairs of Milwaukee Succeeds: Community Volunteer Jackie Herd-Barber, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Chancellor Mike Lovell, and Northwestern Mutual Chairman and CEO John Schlifske — The goals of Milwaukee Succeeds are nothing if not ambitious. The communitywide collaboration aims to improve educational outcomes for every child in Milwaukee, in every school. The initiative was launched two years ago by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Greater Milwaukee Committee, Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, Milwaukee Urban League, United Way of Greater Milwaukee, and the Helen Bader Foundation. Recently, Milwaukee Succeeds released its annual Milestone Report, tracking the progress of students in the city. The results were daunting. Only 15 per cent of all third graders were reading at a proficient level. So how do we change that number and help Milwaukee reach its full potential? Co-chairs Jackie Herd-Barber, Mike Lovell, and John Schlifske will provide an update on the initiative and the effort to bring greater academic success to the city’s public, voucher, and charter schools.
