Joseph Zilber

“Each of us in our own way and with our own resources, large or small, can make a difference,” says Joseph Zilber.

Clearly, it is a belief he puts into practice – as shown recently in his $50 million “New Potential for Milwaukee” initiative, through which Zilber committed $30 million to Marquette University Law School. The gift includes $5 million toward construction of the new building and $25 million for scholarships.

This latest gift is an extension of contributions that Zilber – who graduated from the Law School in 1941 after studying business administration at Marquette as an undergraduate – has been making for decades.

“Marquette is Milwaukee’s law school and my alma mater,” he explains. “My hope is that others will have the opportunity to take advantage of Marquette’s rigorous legal education, which is steeped in the tradition of the values of excellence, faith, service and leadership.”

Zilber adds, “Investing in education and the young men and women who will be tomorrow’s legal, political and business leaders, is a commitment to our future. The building is important, but access to a Marquette education changes lives, not only for the students themselves, but for their children and their children’s children.  I believe in investing in people; I want today’s law students who have financial need to enjoy the same opportunity I had.”

In recognition of his gift, a four-story atrium in the new Law School building will be called the Zilber Forum.
