Professor James D. Ghiardi is a 1942 graduate of the Marquette University Law School, where he has been a full-time member since 1946, specializing in torts, insurance, and civil litigation. He now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus.
He is an author of numerous legal articles, as well as a book on Damages, and co-author of a two-volume work, Punitive Damages: Law & Practice. He was Research Director of the Defense Research Institute from 1962 to 1972. In 1970-71 he served as President of the Wisconsin State Bar, after serving eight years on the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of that organization.
Besides belonging to the Milwaukee Bar, State Bar of Wisconsin and American Bar Association, he was a Delegate to the ABA House of Delegates from 1967 to 1980. He is active in the ABA's Torts and Insurance Practice Section of the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel. In addition to being a member of DRI, he is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a member of the American Judicature Society and the American Law Institute. He has held and continues to hold editorial positions for several legal publications and periodicals, and was of-counsel to the law firm of Kluwin, Dunphy & Hankin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1973 to 1989.
He is an active member of the Justinian Society of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II from July 1942 until December 1945 in the European Theater. He was discharged as a Captain.
He is the recipient of many honors including the 1971 Marquette University Teaching Excellence Award; the Marquette University Law School Alumnus of the Year Award (1971); the Defense Research Institute Distinguished Service Award (1972); the Charles L. Goldberg Award for Outstanding Public Service, Wisconsin Bar Association (1986); The Charles S. Pinckney New York Defense Lawyer's Award for Legal Scholarship (1986); the Distinguished Professor of Tort and Insurance Law Award from the American Bar Association, Tort and Insurance Practice Section (1989); the Milwaukee Bar Association Lifetime Achievement Award (1993); and the Justinian Society of Wisconsin 1998 Person of the Year Award.
