I looked at several pro hockey team roster (Oilers, Maple Leafs and Penguins) and could see no correlation between birthday and success. I also found this web site: http://www.trackvia.com/blog/2009/01/27/poking-holes-in-outliers/. I really bought into Gladwell's thesis -- please tell me I'm missing something.

I eagerly anticipated receiving this book for Christmas, and once it was unwrapped, I had finished it by the evening of the 26th. Simply put, Gladwell's work here is remarkable. As a Poli Sci undergrad and now a law student, both math and social dynamics have never been my raison d'etre, but now all I can do is to talk to everyone at length about how interesting this book is. As a still lost 1L, I too find hope that in whatever I end up doing in life I can be successful if I am dedicated enough to the task and if a few fortunate opportunities happen to come my way.

Dan's account makes me wonder (also hope) that a passion for something makes a difference. Those thousands of hours of invested time may result more often from passion than calculation. My career advice has always been to find what you love to do. Even if it does not bring riches, it will bring satisfaction. And maybe, if I correctly extrapolate from Dan's account of Gladwell's thesis, it is an element in many instances of overwhelming success (timing and talent being critical elements as well).
