In 1908, there was nothing particularly original about the idea that a federal circuit court judge would be an appropriate candidate to be the dean of a law school. From 1905 to 1909, future Supreme Court Justice Horace Lurton served as the dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Law while serving as a full-time member of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
