Law Student Volunteer Information

Get trained to join other Marquette Law Students in serving the Milwaukee community and graduate with an honor cord for service once you complete 50+ hours!  All students (including 1Ls) are encouraged to attend the training and volunteer.

  • Live, in-person training is offered at the beginning of every semester and summer.  Dates and registration information will appear in Law News.
  • Online training for students joining us mid-semester is available here.
  • Once you are trained for the MVLC, you can pick up shifts at any of the locations. They all function essentially the same and it's nice to sample the "flavor" of each site. Information on all locations can be found here.

  • August 30, 2017, 12:00-1:15 PM at Marquette Law School, Room TBD. Register here.

Once you have completed training, sign up for shifts here.
  • Please record your pro bono hours in your online account using the instructions here for your own records as well as for the purpose of Law School records.
  • You can also view your completed pro bono hours and upcoming assignments for the MVLC and some other pro bono projects.
  • Getting There: You can take the shuttle to the House of Peace or United Community Center locations.  The shuttle returns to the Law School a second time for those who finish class after the clinics start.  Click here for information about the shuttle and your first shift.

  • Attire: Business casual is recommended as it is neat and presentable, but not intimidating to clients who may be nervous about meeting with a lawyer.  No ripped jeans, flip flops, or sloppy, tight, or revealing clothing.
  • Missing Shifts: If you must miss an assigned shift, first check with trained classmates to see if someone can take your place. If you are unable to find a classmate to take your shift, send a sub request to the listserv at, including in the subject line: "Sub needed MVLC, your assignment day, date, time, and location" (e.g., Sub needed MVLC, Tuesday, October 14, 5-7 PM, HOP).  Once you find a sub, please email clinic staff at to notify them of the change.
*Multiple unexcused absences may make you ineligible to continue volunteering.
