Summer 2024 Course Information Now Available

Summer registration materials are now available on the Registration Materials page of the Law School’s website. You must be logged in to access the page.

Registration will open on Monday, March 25. Students are asked to register on CheckMarq by Wednesday, April 3, at 12:00 p.m. While students may enroll in a summer course any time before the class begins, the decision of whether to offer a course will be based on CheckMarq enrollment as of April 3, 2024. 

Please note that summer semester is billed separately from the fall and spring terms, and students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits to qualify for financial aid. More information can be found within the registration materials packet and on the Office of Financial Aid's website.

1L Students: 

  • We will provide you with more detailed information regarding the course registration process and degree requirements at an upcoming information session on Monday, March 18.
  • Professor Anne Kearney will also hold an information session on supervised field placements, judicial internships, and clinics on Wednesday, March 6.

1Ls and 2Ls: Important Dates and Information for Fall Registration Process

Please note the upcoming important dates pertaining to fall registration.

  • Week after Spring Break: Fall registration materials will be available on the Law School's website and Class Search
  • Monday, March 18, at noon in the Lubar Center: 1L Registration Information Session - All first-year students are strongly encouraged to attend this event where we will walk students through the ins and outs of registering for fall semester.
  • Monday, March 25, at noon in room 433: Fall Curricular Fair - All students are welcome to attend this event, wherein different curricular programs will have tables and be available to talk about student interest in registering/applying to register for their programs.
  • April 8 & 9, various times: Fall registration begins; students are assigned appointment times in CheckMarq and should plan to sign up for courses at their assigned appointment time. In order to register for fall classes, students must complete Preregistration Cheq and otherwise not have any registration holds on their accounts. 

Once fall registration materials are released, students are welcome to set up a meeting with Registrar Toerpe Mason or Dean Fodor to discuss their individual fall course schedules and any questions they have about registration. Summer 2024 Semester Schedule Updates

Please note, there is a slight change in the summer schedule of classes. Professor Blemberg’s Seminar: Professional and Ethical Identity Formation, will now meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:45 to 11:15 a.m.

In addition, please note that while the Evidence class is remote, the final exam is an in-person exam.

Final Exam ID Numbers, Room Assignments, and More

Below are several important updates regarding final exams.

Final Exam ID Numbers

Anonymous ID numbers for final exams are posted on the Law School website. You can find your final exam ID on your individual directory page after you have logged into the website. Please note, this number is distinct from your MUID and any former midterm or final exam ID numbers that were listed on your directory page prior to March 28, 2024.

Final Coursework Student Agreement

All Marquette law students, even those without scheduled exams, must submit this required form, which was due on April 12. If you have not already done so, please click here to access the agreement, which takes fewer than five minutes to complete.

Exam Rooms

Students should not expect to take their final exam in the room in which their course met. If you will be taking a scheduled exam this semester, please click here for the room assignments for final exams, and take note of the classroom you will be testing in before you arrive for your exam. You must arrive to your assigned exam room 20 minutes early to receive instructions regarding technology and exam procedures. Please note, 1L exam rooms are determined by the first letter of each student's last name.

Those students who are taking a law school final exam for the first time this semester or who are using a new computer and have an in-person, scheduled final exam this semester must download the Examplify software. For instructions, please click here.

Marquette Law Review Summer 2024 Write-on Competition

MARQUETTE LAW REVIEW | Vol. 108 – A Proud Tradition of Scholarship and Service

How to Earn Membership:

  1. Participate in the Summer 2024 Writing Competition, or
  2. “Grade on”

Note: To participate in the competition, you must complete all required 1L courses and have at least two semesters remaining by the end of the spring semester.

SUMMER 2024 WRITING COMPETITION

The write-on competition consists of two parts:

  1. Issue Analysis—A concise, analytical treatment of a relevant legal issue addressed in the cases and legal scholarship provided to you. Your Issue Analysis will not be a reiteration of case law. Rather, it will explain the issue and provide a reasoned conclusion as to which legal result you think is justified. More specific information will be provided prior to the Writing Competition’s start date. 
  2. Bluebook Editing Exercise—An exercise in identifying and correcting errors in citation, formatting, grammar, and punctuation according to the Bluebook and provided excerpts from the Texas Law Review Manual on Usage & Style (TLR).

Timeline:

  • Step 1: Register on TWEN (available now) before 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June ­14, at which point enrollment will close.
    • The Marquette Law Review Vol. 108 Write-On Competition Westlaw Web Course (TWEN) will contain all materials, instructions, and the platform for submission. 
  • Step 2: Receive anonymous number and additional instructions for the competition.  
  • Step 3: The 2023 Writing Competition will begin at 7:00 a.m. on ­­­­­Saturday, June 15, and end at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.  
    • You must turn in your submission by 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, for your materials to be graded. Late submissions will not be accepted. 
  • Step 4: Marquette Law Review Editorial Board members will grade your anonymous competition materials. You will receive notice of your result within a reasonable time after your submission.  
    • The Editorial Board’s decision is final.

How to Prepare for the Competition:

  • Read the examples that will be posted on the TWEN page before the competition.  
    • These examples will guide you through content, structure, format, and citation form.
  • Browse through published Marquette Law Review articles and comments. 
  • Review the contents of the Bluebook.  
    • Submitting a technically perfect Issue Analysis may give you an advantage in the competition, and basic familiarity with the Bluebook will make the editing exercise easier.  Have your copy of the Bluebook ready for the competition.

Fall 2024 Application for Clinic/Internship Placements Now Available

The Fall 2024 Semester application for Clinics, Judicial internships, and Supervised Fieldwork Placements are now available. 

Clinic opportunities include seats in the Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic, the Mediation Clinic, the Restorative Justice Clinic, the Prosecutor Clinic, and the Public Defender Clinic.

Congratulations to the Mock Trial Teams

Marquette Law School’s Trial Skills Course competed nationally this last weekend. Members of the course include: Cora Baudhuin, Connor Mathias, Isaiahs Luna, Jack Bennett, Aiyanah Simms, Anissa Garcia, Mitchell Dess, and Sarah Bondar.

Both teams performed remarkably and Team 2 made it to the final round. The teams’ presentations were at a high professional level and scoring judges indicated all of Marquette’s members performed better than some practicing attorneys. Both teams represented Marquette University Law School proudly. 

Congratulations to the teams for all their efforts and truly amazing skills demonstrated during the 2024 competition.

  • Make sure that you complete Preregistration Cheq before your registration appointment time to avoid a registration hold.
  • If you have any registration holds on your account, take steps to clear the holds before your registration appointment time to avoid delays. 
  • All students are responsible for reviewing the final exam schedule when they register. Final exams will not be rescheduled for avoidable conflicts or back-to-back exam schedules.

Marquette Sports Law Review Summer 2024 Writing Competition

The Marquette Sports Law Review's summer 2024 membership writing competition is now open. Any student who is in good academic standing (e.g., 2.0 cumulative GPA after the completion of at least 27 credits as of the first 2024 summer session), is eligible to become a member of the Marquette Sports Law Review.

To become a member, a student must participate in the annual summer writing competition and be selected for membership by the current editorial board. Enter the summer competition at this link HERE by Friday, April 26.  

The summer 2024 writing competition will be distributed by email on Monday, May 13, and will be due Friday, June 28, 2024. In most cases, competiting in the summer competition is a prerequisite to being considered for a Sports Law Certificate Program internship.

Mediation Clinic Accepting Applications for Summer and Fall 2024

The Small Claims Mediation Clinic has openings for both the Summer and Fall 2024 sessions. Learn how to mediate and then use that skill to mediate actual cases from Milwaukee County's Small Claims Court.

You will get an opportunity to mediate in-person and via Zoom. This is a skill that carries into every aspect of the law as well as your everyday life.
