Adrian P. Schoone Fund for the Study of Wisconsin Law and Legal Institutions – Request for Proposals

Marquette University Law School has long maintained a special interest in Wisconsin law. The Marquette Law Review, the oldest academic law publication in the state and one of the oldest in the country, provides compelling evidence. Since its establishment in 1916, the journal has been cited many hundreds of times by the Wisconsin Supreme Court and other courts in the state. Even as Marquette Law School has gained greater national prominence in more-recent decades, the Marquette Law Review has continued to include Wisconsin matters among its focuses (as reflected in the partial list from the past thirty years at the bottom of this page). This interest in Wisconsin has been reflected as well in various other initiatives of the Law School.

In these circumstances, Marquette Law School is pleased to announce the Adrian P. Schoone Fund for the Study of Wisconsin Law and Legal Institutions. The Law School will use the Schoone Fund to support research and articles concerning Wisconsin law and legal institutions for presentation in its journals and on its website. Through its Schoone Fund, the school will provide stipends in support of such research and articles.

The Law School especially hopes to continue the tradition of such research’s emerging from practitioners as well as faculty and students. The school thus invites proposals for articles. The school will notify applicants whether the proposal has been accepted in concept and will provide a stipend upon its development into an article. The Law School will exercise the considerable judgment required, especially because the primary interest of practitioners is advocacy (e.g., we do not want people simply repackaging their appellate briefs).

Proposals should be limited to 1,000 words. They must include the name and email address of the person submitting them, although they will be treated as confidential. They may be submitted via the text box below or by emailing Christine Wilczynski-Vogel, Associate Dean for External Relations, at christine.wv@marquette.edu. A committee will review each proposal, and a response will be forthcoming (typically, we hope, within 30 days of submission).

The Law School also will welcome written suggestions from lawyers and judges who, though not interested themselves in writing an article or essay, wish to commend for others particular matters for attention. The more developed a suggestion, the more likely it will be to receive attention.
