Biography

Mediator Jill Hamill Sopha is Owner and Managing Director of Sopha Mediation LLC, a company dedicated to helping employers and employees avoid and/or find alternatives to workplace disputes and litigation through mediation.

Jill is a seasoned employment attorney (J.D.) and a Senior Certified Human Resources (HR) Professional (SHRM-SCP). Jill has 20+ years as a business leader, holding both legal and HR leadership roles – most recently as Chief Counsel, HR for Fortune 500 Company Harley-Davidson, Inc. Jill has a wealth of experience in, and a passion for, negotiating creative solutions to avoid and resolve workplace disputes and litigation. As a full-time employment attorney mediator, Jill combines her unparalleled workplace experience with her skills as an active listener and creative problem solver, her reputation for fairness and a relentless drive for results, and her calm and non-judgmental, yet rational and practical, approach.

Prior to opening Sopha Mediation LLC, Jill spent the past 15 years in progressive Legal and HR leadership roles at Fortune 500 Company Harley-Davidson, Inc. – most recently as Chief Counsel, Human Resources. At Harley-Davidson, Jill provided primary direction and guidance on all HR-related legal issues, developed and implemented a Global HR Compliance program, and led a team of HR professionals responsible for providing day-to-day HR support. Before her work at Harley-Davidson, Jill was an employment attorney at the law firms Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren S.C. in Madison, WI, and Neal, Gerber & Eisenberg LLP and Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP in Chicago, IL.

Jill is an Adjunct Professor at Marquette Law School, where she teaches a 3 credit “Mediation Advocacy” course. Jill also teaches "Conducting Efficient and Effective HR Investigations" at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s School of Continuing Education. Jill is a frequent speaker on topics involving mediation and employment law. Recently, Jill presented “The Strategic Use of Mediation to Resolve Employment Disputes: A Fresh Perspective from Chief Counsel – Human Resources for Harley-Davidson Turned Mediator” for the Milwaukee Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Section. She also recently spoke on a panel discussing the “FLSA Overtime Rule: What You Need to Know” for the Council for Small Business Executives (COSBE). Jill’s article “Are Mediation Term Sheets Final, Binding Agreements? The Seven Circuit Provides Guidance” was recently published on the Wisconsin Bar Dispute Resolution Section’s blog.

Jill has completed extensive mediation training at the nationally renowned Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine’s University School of Law and at Chicago’s Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR).

Jill has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with distinction, from the University of Wisconsin – Madison Business School (1993), and obtained her Juris Doctorate degree, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School (1996).
