{"id":10781,"date":"2010-07-02T23:13:18","date_gmt":"2010-07-03T04:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/?p=10781"},"modified":"2010-07-03T10:17:52","modified_gmt":"2010-07-03T15:17:52","slug":"best-of-the-blogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/2010\/07\/best-of-the-blogs\/","title":{"rendered":"Best of the Blogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/blog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-10782\" title=\"blog\" src=\"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/blog-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Time for a new feature here at the Marquette University Faculty Blog.\u00a0 From time to time the editors of the blog will share\u00a0links to some of the more interesting recent law-related posts appearing on the blogosphere.\u00a0 I will get things started.<\/p>\n<p>Over at Scotusblog, Tom Goldstein has an excellent round up of the recently concluded Supreme Court term.\u00a0\u00a0It is commonplace to read\u00a0broad generalizations about the Roberts Court in the media lately, for example during the hearings on the nomination of Elena Kagan.\u00a0\u00a0Is this an activist Court, rejecting precedent and beholden to corporate interests?\u00a0 Or has the Court found its moorings once again after years of drifting along according to\u00a0the whims of Justice Kennedy?\u00a0 Tom takes a cold hard look at the evidence, and his conclusions may surprise you.\u00a0\u00a0You can read his post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2010\/06\/everything-you-read-about-the-supreme-court-is-wrong\/#more-22491\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Readers of this blog\u00a0know that we often have posts related to\u00a0sports law, and over at the Law Blog at the Wall Street Journal you can find\u00a0a good post on the Phillie Phanatic, dubbed the most dangerous\u00a0mascot in all of professional sports.\u00a0 According to a recent academic study, the Phanatic holds the dubious distinction of being the most sued sports mascot.\u00a0 You can read the post by Ashby Jones <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/law\/2010\/06\/30\/the-phillie-phanatic-funny-cute-irreverant-and-dangerous\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 The job of professional sports mascots must be\u00a0one of the most interesting and entertaining jobs around, and the elite fraternity that hold these jobs have\u00a0some great stories to share.\u00a0 I know this for a fact because I once spent an enoyable evening\u00a0drinking beers with the brother of our own Assistant Dean for Career Planning Paul Katzman, who worked for some time as a sports mascot.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Above the Law blog has a nice appreciation of Martin Ginsburg by David Lat.\u00a0 You can read it <a href=\"http:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2010\/06\/martin-ginsburg-noted-tax-lawyer-and-husband-of-justice-ginsburg-r-i-p\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Marty Ginsburg recently passed away.\u00a0 He was almost certainly\u00a0the best tax lawyer in the country, although many people\u00a0knew him better as the husband of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.\u00a0 He accepted the\u00a0prospect of being overshadowed by his spouse with good humor, which was the way he approached life in general.\u00a0\u00a0I worked at the same law firm as Marty when I was a newly minted\u00a0associate.\u00a0 He was a kind and generous man, in additon to being brilliant.\u00a0 The profession was alot more formal back then.\u00a0 There was no such thing as &#8220;casual Friday,&#8221; for example.\u00a0 At a time in my career when I was afraid to leave my office without first putting on my suit jacket, Marty was famous for wearing loud Hawaiian shirts to the office.\u00a0\u00a0He sent the message to us young lawyers that it is possible to be professional and still have fun.\u00a0 He will be missed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time for a new feature here at the Marquette University Faculty Blog.\u00a0 From time to time the editors of the blog will share\u00a0links to some of the more interesting recent law-related posts appearing on the blogosphere.\u00a0 I will get things started.
