{"id":12061,"date":"2010-11-01T11:26:56","date_gmt":"2010-11-01T16:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/?p=12061"},"modified":"2020-02-15T21:36:57","modified_gmt":"2020-02-16T03:36:57","slug":"where-do-wisconsin-lawyers-obtain-their-legal-educations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/2010\/11\/where-do-wisconsin-lawyers-obtain-their-legal-educations\/","title":{"rendered":"Where Do Wisconsin Lawyers Obtain Their Legal Educations?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/engel-and-harris.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-12062\" title=\"engel and harris\" src=\"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/engel-and-harris-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>To no one\u2019s surprise, the vast majority of current Wisconsin lawyers received their legal education in the Badger State.\u00a0 According to official figures, 12,357 of 20,841 (59.3%) of the current active members of the Wisconsin State Bar are graduates of the law schools at Marquette and the University of Wisconsin.\u00a0\u00a0 Slightly more than a third of all lawyers (7249, or 34.8%) attended Wisconsin while just under one quarter (5108, or 24.5%) are graduates of Marquette.<\/p>\n<p>After Wisconsin, the states whose law schools currently contribute the largest number of alumni to the Wisconsin bar are Minnesota and Illinois, whose 1,824 and 1301 graduates account for 8.8% and 6.2% of the lawyers in the state, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Other than Wisconsin, the top 10 states supplying lawyers to Wisconsin are:<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1824<\/p>\n<p>Illinois\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a01301<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0518<\/p>\n<p>Iowa\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0442<\/p>\n<p>Indiana\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0411<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts\u00a0 332<\/p>\n<p>California\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0299<\/p>\n<p>New York\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0240<\/p>\n<p>Dist. Columbia\u00a0\u00a0 237<\/p>\n<p>Ohio\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0214<\/p>\n<p>The only other states with at least 100 alumni currently practicing law in Wisconsin are Nebraska (142) and\u00a0 Virginia (121), although Florida just misses at 99.\u00a0 The dominance of Midwestern states on the list is not surprising, as the national pattern is that most lawyers go to law school in the region in which they eventually practice.\u00a0 (Note that in spite of the recent influx of Yale Law School graduates on to the Marquette Law School faculty, Connecticut does not make the list.)<\/p>\n<p>If we focus on individual law schools instead of states, the Top 10 contributors to the Wisconsin bar, after Wisconsin and Marquette are listed below.\u00a0 Minnesota schools dominate the top of the list:<\/p>\n<p>Hamline \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 655<\/p>\n<p>Wm Mitchell\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 638<\/p>\n<p>U. \u201cfeeder\u201d schools are from the Midwest, with Harvard and Georgetown the only exceptions.\u00a0 The afore-mentioned Yale clocks in at 26<sup>th<\/sup> overall, tied with St. Louis University
