Evans &#8217;67 had served since 1995 on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.\u00a0 Before that, he served as a trial\u00a0judge in federal district court and Milwaukee County Circuit Court.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Evans was\u00a0profiled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/s3\/site\/images\/alumni\/magazine\/Summer05\/Summer05pp4-9.pdf\">here<\/a>\u00a0in the <em>Marquette Lawyer<\/em>, along with his Seventh Circuit colleagues Judge John L. Coffey &#8217;48 and Judge Diane S. Sykes &#8217;84.\u00a0\u00a0Judge Evans&#8217; <em>Journal Sentinel <\/em>obituary is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/obituaries\/127523413.html\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 A webcast of an &#8220;On the Issues&#8221; conversation he had with Mike Gousha and Judge Sykes is <a href=\"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/cgi-bin\/site.pl?2130&amp;pageID=3823\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 (The picture above comes from that exchange.)<\/p>\n<p>I never had the pleasure of meeting Judge Evans in person,\u00a0but I&#8217;ve read many of his opinions. \u00a0They do have a distinct style and sensibility &#8212; once you&#8217;ve read a few, you are not likely to mistake an Evans opinion for that of any of his colleagues. \u00a0The opinions reflect a sharp wit, an eye for the telling factual detail, and a commonsensical approach to judging. \u00a0I doubt there are many judges on the federal bench whose opinions would be more accessible and engaging for the lay reader.<\/p>\n<p>The Wisconsin Public Defender&#8217;s On Point website has collected some wonderful personal reminiscences of Judge Evans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinappeals.net\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Among the many\u00a0notable tributes is one from his former clerk Daniel J. O&#8217;Brien &#8217;78, who observed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>No one \u2013 NO ONE \u2013 enjoyed life more than \u201cThe Judge.\u201d Luckily, for those of us privileged to spend time with him, that joie de vivre (borrowed from Judge Easterbrook\u2019s marvelous tribute) was contagious. . . .<\/p>\n<p>The Judge\u2019s skill as a jurist was surpassed only by his warmth as a person. The word \u201cmentor\u201d is far down the list of adjectives describing his impact on my life [Others that come to mind: Marquette recruiting analyst, legal writing tutor (\u201cTo be a good legal writer,\u201d he\u2019d often say, \u201cwrite like a journalist, not a lawyer\u201d), comedian, Brewer fan, role model, expert on \u201cgreasy spoon\u201d diners, and friend].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Visitation is today from 4:00 to 8:00 at Feerick Funeral Home, 2015 E.
