A little holiday cheer while grading exams\u2013here\u2019s how (yet another) failed negotiation went in my house this past fall. For context, my son Noah broke his leg on the very first day of school, 10 minutes into the very first soccer practice of the year. Since he couldn\u2019t move much, his friends have been over many days this fall hanging out.<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Mom, you know we\u2019ve been making this cool video of trick shots?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: Yes<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Can I get up on the roof to make a shot?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: No!!!<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Why Not?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: YOU HAVE A BROKEN LEG\u2026<\/p>\n

Next Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Please can I get up on the roof?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: Are you kidding me? YOU HAVE A BROKEN LEG! Are you looking for another one?<\/p>\n

Next Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Can my friends get up on the roof?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: No, I don\u2019t want them getting hurt either!<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: But Mom!!!<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: No. No way, no how.<\/p>\n

Next Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: How about if you watch them and make sure they are safe, then can my friends get up on the roof?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: Seriously, if they are going to fall, then I get to watch them fall? This is your best offer?<\/p>\n

Next Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: How about if my friends already were on the roof and made the shot?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: Are you kidding me? WHEN DID YOU DO THIS?<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Last week, before I started asking you. I knew you\u2019d say no but I wanted your permission before we added it to the video.<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: Is everyone safe?<\/p>\n

Son<\/em>: Yes, do you want to see the shot?<\/p>\n

Mom<\/em>: I suppose\u2026\u2026..oooh, cool shot!!!<\/p>\n
