(How have you been celebrating?) I thought I would take the occasion to post one of my favorites, from a poet who is not that well known any more: Gerard Manley Hopkins. Hopkins wrote poems in a peculiar style; among other things, the stress marks in the lines below are intended to indicate emphasis &#8212; I think the poem works better if you follow them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Spring and Fall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>to a young child<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">M\u00e1rgar\u00e9t, \u00e1re you gr\u00edeving<br \/>\nOver Goldengrove unleaving?<br \/>\nLe\u00e1ves, l\u00edke the things of man, you<br \/>\nWith your fresh thoughts care for, can you?<br \/>\n\u00c1h! \u00e1s the heart grows older<br \/>\nIt will come to such sights colder<br \/>\nBy and by, nor spare a sigh<br \/>\nThough worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;<br \/>\nAnd yet you w\u00edll weep and know why.<br \/>\nNow no matter, child, the name:<br \/>\nS\u00f3rrow\u2019s spr\u00edngs \u00e1re the same.<br \/>\nNor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed<br \/>\nWhat heart heard of, ghost guessed:<br \/>\nIt \u00eds the blight man was born for,<br \/>\nIt is Margaret you mourn for.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Professor Mazzie noted below, April is National Poetry Month.
