The Region VIII round of the NMCC was hosted by Marquette this weekend and included ten participating law schools.\u00a0 This\u00a0year Marquette won the regional competition, winning all five of their rounds and advancing to the\u00a0nationals in\u00a0New York City this coming\u00a0February.<\/p>\n<p>Please congratulate team members\u00a0Hans Lodge, Brendon Reyes, and Robert Steele, whose team\u00a0advanced to, and won, the final round\u00a0of competition (top team out of sixteen). The team additionally received the\u00a0third highest brief score at the competition. Attorneys Emily Lonergan\u00a0and Jason Luczak coached the team.<\/p>\n<p>Please also congratulate team members\u00a0Andy Gordon, Mindy Nolan, and Kaitlyn\u00a0Reise\u00a0for their performance at the competition. Attorneys Jesse Blocher\u00a0and Michael Cerjak coached the team.<\/p>\n<p>The NMCC is sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.actl.com\/Content\/NavigationMenu\/AboutUs\/AwardsandCompetitions\/NationalMootCourt\/default.htm\">New York City Bar and the American College of Trial Lawyers<\/a>. Over 180 law schools compete across the country.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s issues were 1) whether a fictional beverage and bottle act&#8217;s posting requirement\u00a0violated a fictional association of beverage producers and\u00a0retailers&#8217; First Amendment rights, and 2) whether the act&#8217;s unique mark requirement violated the dormant commerce clause.<\/p>\n<p>I am grateful for our teams\u2019 hard work; they put in many hours of practice to prepare for the competition (sometimes practicing three or more times a day). I am also grateful for the time donated by the Marquette Moot Court Association, and in particular, Mike Beckman, who chaired this event.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you as well to the many judges and lawyers who judged the briefs and oral arguments for our NMCC\u00a0regional, and who, year after year, enthusiastically support this large endeavor. This year we had judges drive from all over Wisconsin for the event, and one judge even flew in from St. Louis to participate.\u00a0 Finally, thank you to the individuals who judged the teams\u2019 numerous practice rounds.\u00a0 We will be calling on practice judges for the next few months to help us prepare for the nationals.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t wait!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had the privilege of working with two outstanding National Moot Court Competition (NMCC) teams again this year.
