Boden Visiting Professor of Law, spoke to the Marquette Legal Writing Society about her work and interest in legal writing.<\/p>\n<p>This semester Professor Edwards is teaching a course on the great briefs.\u00a0 Each week students study a brief to determine what made the brief successful\u2014what made it sing, as she said.\u00a0 Among her favorite briefs are the petitioner\u2019s briefs in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1960-1969\/1965\/1965_759\"><em>Miranda v. Arizona<\/em><\/a> and in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1980-1989\/1985\/1985_85_140\">Bowers v. Hardwick<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0 Professor Edwards recommended reading and studying good briefs as a way for an advocate to advance his or her own persuasive writing. Aside from the briefs she mentions in her book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspenpublishers.com\/Product.asp?catalog_name=Aspen&amp;category_name=&amp;product_id=0735587752&amp;cookie_test=1\"><em>Readings in\u00a0Persuasion:\u00a0Briefs that Changed the World<\/em><\/a>, she recommended reading anything written by the Solicitor General\u2019s office and anything written by any of the Supreme Court justices as examples of great legal writing.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Edwards\u00a0also noted that really good briefs speak to the reader and that a legal writer\u2019s own voice should come through the brief.\u00a0 While structure is important, she said, formulaic writing of briefs is not effective.\u00a0 She cautioned against\u00a0doggedly following\u00a0a set of received\u00a0&#8220;rules&#8221; rather than crafting a document for a particular reader or situation.\u00a0 Good legal writing doesn&#8217;t have to sound lifeless or mechanical,\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the Marquette Legal Writing Society is to foster discussion about legal writing.\u00a0 Elizabeth Oestreich is the president of this year\u2019s organization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, Professor Linda Edwards, the Robert F.
