I had the privilege of working with two outstanding National Moot Court Competition (NMCC)<\/a> teams again this year. Marquette hosted the Region VIII round of the 65th Annual NMCC this weekend and included thirteen participating teams.\u00a0 Marquette fielded two teams; please congratulate both on their strong finishes.<\/p>\n

Michelle Cahoon, James Decleene, and Brian Kane took the best Petitioner’s brief award with the top scoring brief in the competition.\u00a0 The team advanced the semifinal round and just missed qualifying for nationals by less than a point.\u00a0 Attorneys Jesse Blocher, Michael Cerjak, and Brendon Reyes coached the team.\u00a0 Brendon, now an attorney practicing in Waukesha, was a member of last year’s national team.\u00a0 Jesse was a member of one of my first NMCC teams.<\/p>\n

Jennifer McNamee and Elizabeth Oestreich advanced to the quarterfinals and were the number 1 seed after the preliminaries, after particularly strong showings in their oral arguments.\u00a0 That team was coached by Attorneys Emily Lonergan, Jason Luczak, and Max Stephenson.\u00a0 Elizabeth, Emily, and Max happened all to have (Elizabeth), or had (Emily and Jason), the role of Chief Justice of our Moot Court Association.\u00a0 I enjoyed watching the students and coaches on both teams working together and getting to know each other.<\/p>\n

The NMCC is sponsored by the New York City Bar and the American College of Trial Lawyers<\/a>. Over 180 law schools compete across the country.<\/p>\n

I am grateful for our teams\u2019 hard work; they put in many hours of practice to prepare for the competition. The teams and their coaches often worked late into the night practicing their arguments.\u00a0 I am also grateful for the time donated by the Marquette Moot Court Association, and in particular, Dane Brown, who chaired this event.<\/p>\n

Thank you as well to the many judges and lawyers who judged the briefs and oral arguments for our NMCC\u00a0regional, and who, year after year, enthusiastically support this large endeavor. This year we had judges traveling from as far as St. Louis, northern Wisconsin, and Minneapolis to judge this weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
