{"id":26618,"date":"2017-04-29T11:29:20","date_gmt":"2017-04-29T16:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/?p=26618"},"modified":"2017-04-29T11:29:20","modified_gmt":"2017-04-29T16:29:20","slug":"welcome-may-bloggers-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/2017\/04\/welcome-may-bloggers-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome May Bloggers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Please join me in welcoming our guest bloggers for the month of May: Michael Anspach and Anthony (Tony) Cotton.<\/p>\n<p>Our Student Blogger for May is Michael Anspach.\u00a0 Michael\u00a0just completed\u00a0his second year at Marquette Law. \u00a0He has been\u00a0elected Editor in Chief of the <em>Marquette Law Review<\/em> for Volume 101\u00a0and he is also Founder of the Law School&#8217;s Organization for Student Wellbeing. \u00a0He was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and he received his B.A. from Boston College with a Major in Philosophy and a Minor in Music. \u00a0Shortly after graduating from Boston College in 2012, Michael began studying the\u00a0Eastern traditions, specifically Hatha\u00a0yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda (the traditional Hindu system of medicine). \u00a0He became a certified yoga, meditation, and Perfect Health: Ayurvedic Lifestyle instructor through Deepak Chopra&#8217;s school in Carlsbad, California. \u00a0Since that time, Michael has been\u00a0a daily yoga and meditation practitioner. \u00a0While in the process of starting his own yoga business, Michael came to realize two things: First, he did not want to turn his spiritual practices into a money-making endeavor, and, second,\u00a0he enjoyed the contract work,\u00a0negotiation, and intellectual stimulation, that goes along\u00a0with any startup business. \u00a0Shortly after coming to this realization, Michael made the decision to attend law school. \u00a0This summer, he will\u00a0work at the firm of\u00a0Anspach Meeks Ellenberger LLP, based out of Toledo, Ohio, where he will focus on civil litigation defense, specifically the defense\u00a0of nationally-based,\u00a0long-term care facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Cotton is our Alumni Blogger for May.\u00a0<span class=\"profiletext\">Tony was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He\u00a0attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for two years before transferring to UW-Madison. At Madison, Tony majored in Political Science and was twice elected to student government.\u00a0 Tony the attended Marquette University Law School, where he\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"profiletext\">focused heavily on criminal and international law. During his second year of law school Tony was awarded a grant from the Public Interest Law Society so that he could investigate human rights abuses in Eritrea, East Africa. In the summer of 2004, Tony\u00a0traveled throughout Eritrea to interview civilians and prepare claims for people who had suffered damages as a result of the Eritrean-Ethiopian war.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"profiletext\">While still in law school, Tony secured an internship with the Federal Defender\u2019s Office in Milwaukee. AS a law clerk, Tony helped draft a habeas brief to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and he was invited to Washington, D.C. to help the attorneys prepare arguments for one of the most significant criminal cases in United States history: <i>United States vs. Booker<\/i> (2005).\u00a0 After graduation in 2005, Tony began working at Kuchler &amp; Cotton, S.C. in Waukesha.\u00a0All of Tony\u2019s practice involves defending those accused of crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"profiletext\">Tony was elected to the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (WACDL) and has served as\u00a0President of that organization. He has also served on\u00a0the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL).\u00a0\u00a0Tony\u00a0has been recognized by Super Lawyers, every year since 2008, and was selected by\u00a0The Wisconsin Law Journal\u00a0as an \u201cUp and Coming Lawyer\u201d in 2010.
