{"id":3732,"date":"2009-02-13T14:32:16","date_gmt":"2009-02-13T19:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/?p=3732"},"modified":"2009-02-13T14:32:16","modified_gmt":"2009-02-13T19:32:16","slug":"the-future-of-milwaukee-public-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/law.marquette.edu\/facultyblog\/2009\/02\/the-future-of-milwaukee-public-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of Milwaukee Public Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are entering what may prove to be a remarkably rich and productive period of public conversation regarding the future of Milwaukee Public Schools.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/milwaukee\/39499812.html\">As reported by Alan Borsuk in this morning&#8217;s <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/news\/milwaukee\/39499812.html\">Journal Sentinel<\/a>, <\/em>the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance just released a study that documents extraordinarily high costs in MPS, particularly with respect to employee benefits.\u00a0 But, as Borsuk observes, this is just the first in &#8220;what is likely to be a parade of  major developments and studies that may reshape the future of MPS.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Next up is a report by the Public Policy Forum on school system governance issues, which will be the subject of a panel discussion at the Law School on Monday evening at 7:00.\u00a0 Moderated by our own Mike Gousha, the panel will include many of the leading figures in local government and education, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong class=\"a\">William G. Andrekopoulos<\/strong>, superintendent, Milwaukee Public Schools<\/li>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong class=\"a\">Dr. Howard Fuller, <\/strong>director, Institute for the Transformation of Learning, Marquette University<\/li>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong>Alderman Willie L. Hines, Jr.<\/strong>, president, City of Milwaukee  Common Council<\/li>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong class=\"a\">Jennifer Morales,<\/strong> director, District 5, Milwaukee Public Schools<\/li>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong>Dennis Oulahan<\/strong>,  president, Milwaukee Teachers\u2019 Education Association<\/li>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong class=\"a\">Tim Sheehy<\/strong>, president, Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce<\/li>\n<li class=\"a\"><strong>Rep. Annette Polly Williams<\/strong>, 10th Assembly District, Wisconsin State Assembly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More information about this public event is <a
