\"Semicolon\"Today is National Punctuation Day<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, there really is such a day (it\u2019s the\u00a0sixth annual one, actually), and grammar geeks<\/a> like me are celebrating.\u00a0 There\u2019s even a national baking contest <\/a>where contestants are supposed to bake something in the shape of a punctuation mark.<\/p>\n

Lynne Truss, the author of the best-selling book Eats, Shoots & Leaves:\u00a0 The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation<\/em>,<\/a> says that \u201c[P]unctuation is a courtesy designed to help readers understand a story without stumbling.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a courtesy that applies not only to stories, of course, but to any written product \u2013 letters, articles, memos, briefs, and emails.\u00a0 Punctuation clarifies the writer\u2019s meaning.\u00a0 Take these seven words:\u00a0 A woman without her man is nothing.\u00a0 There are two very different readings of this sentence, depending on how it is punctuated.\u00a0 It could be:\u00a0 A woman, without her man, is nothing.\u00a0 Or it could be:\u00a0 A woman:\u00a0 without her, man is nothing.\u00a0 What a difference punctuation makes!<\/p>\n
