In light of the realization that the stone work above the entrance to the law school honours jurists with a problematic legacy, including Justice John Marshall, Western Law has invited Professor Paul Finkelman, Robert F. Boden Visiting Professor at Marquette University Law School to campus. His lecture titled “Coming to Terms With John Marshall and Slave Owning Jurists” will help us engage in an informed discussion about the path forward.

A specialist in American legal history, constitutional law, and race and the law, Professor Paul Finkelman is the author of more than 200 scholarly articles and more than 50 books. He is the author of Supreme Injustice: Slavery in the Nation’s Highest Court (Harvard UP, 2018). His op-eds and shorter pieces have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, Washington Monthly, and on the Huffington Post.
