Celebrate Your Right to Read During Banned Books Week

Join the Eckstein Law Library in celebrating your right to read and the freedom found in and through books during Banned Books Week. What is your favorite banned or challenged book? Browse the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom’s list of Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023, or visit the archive. That archive includes lists of frequently challenged books by year and decade, and by category, including children’s young adult, classics, and books with diverse content.

Share your favorite using the Banned Books slips and box at the law library’s Circulation Desk for a chance to select Marquette or legal research vendor swag. To submit, stop at the Circulation Desk during library service hours before Friday, September 27, at 4:30 p.m. Entrants whose names are drawn will be notified the week of September 30th. (All are encouraged to enter, but only current Marquette Law students will be eligible for swag. You are also welcome to share your favorite banned book anonymously.)

During Banned Books Week, the library will have the first of several “free book cart” weeks planned for the year. Look for a cart with a “free books” sign in the area near the Circulation Desk and the tables in the reference area on the first floor. You are welcome to take one or more books if you will provide the book a good home, for whatever purpose. Most are older editions, duplicates, or donations, and some contain highlighting or other markings. You never know what you’ll find. Be careful if you plan to use any of the materials on the cart to study, as content might be outdated.
