The Mobile Legal Clinic is a collaborative project of Marquette University Law School and the Milwaukee Bar Association that was created in 2013 to bring free civil legal assistance directly into Milwaukee neighborhoods. Building on the partners’ shared commitment to expanding access to justice, the clinic was designed to reach community members who may face transportation, financial, or other barriers to obtaining legal help through more traditional settings. By meeting people where they already gather—such as libraries, community centers, social service agencies, and other neighborhood locations—the Mobile Legal Clinic makes legal services more accessible to those who need them most.
At the heart of the Mobile Legal Clinic is a volunteer-driven model that engages both attorneys and Marquette law students in meaningful public service. Volunteer lawyers provide legal advice and guidance, while law students contribute under attorney supervision, gaining practical experience while serving the community. Together, these volunteers help address the justice gap by providing timely legal information, resources, and referrals to individuals who might otherwise face civil legal challenges alone.
The Mobile Legal Clinic continually adapts its services to respond to emerging community needs. Its current focus on estate planning, probate, and adult guardianship matters reflects growing demand for legal assistance in these areas. Estate planning can help families avoid unnecessary probate proceedings, reduce the likelihood of future guardianship disputes, and ensure that important decisions are made according to an individual’s wishes. Just as importantly, thoughtful planning can help preserve family assets—including the family home—and support long-term household stability, allowing wealth and opportunity to remain within families and communities for generations.
Through its mobile model, dedicated volunteers, and commitment to meeting evolving community needs, the Mobile Legal Clinic remains focused on one goal: bringing practical, high-quality legal assistance directly to the people and neighborhoods that need it most.
Since its launch in 2013, the Mobile Legal Clinic has received local, state, and national recognition for its innovative approach to expanding access to justice. Honors have included designation as a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “Big Idea of 2013,” the 2014 Wisconsin Innovation Award, the 2014 State Bar of Wisconsin Legal Innovation Award, recognition as one of The National Jurist’s “15 Most Innovative Clinics,” and the 2016 Archdiocese of Milwaukee “Treasures of the Church” Award. These awards reflect the project’s commitment to meeting people where they are and removing barriers to civil legal assistance.
