Biography

Winner of the 2021 James D. Ghiardi Award for Teaching Excellence, Professor Lemann joined the faculty of Marquette University Law School in 2017.  His primary scholarly interests are in the fields of tort law, insurance, and the environment, particularly the design of legal systems to address human responses to risk.  His work has appeared in the Columbia Law Review, the Arizona State Law Journal, and the Georgetown Law Journal, among others.

Before coming to Marquette, Professor Lemann was a Research Fellow at Georgetown University Law Center, where he taught an upper level seminar on Tort Theory.  He also practiced law as a litigator at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York, where he worked on a range of matters, including criminal investigations, civil litigation, and arbitrations.  Before joining Sullivan & Cromwell, he clerked for Judge Denise L. Cote on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York and Judge Marsha S. Berzon on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Professor Lemann received his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he served as an articles editor on the Columbia Law Review and was a James Kent scholar and a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar, and his A.B. from Harvard College.
