*The housing/food/medical/personal expenses of part-time students depend upon their individual work and living situations. The figures listed here are reasonable estimates used by Marquette University's Office of Student Financial Aid to determine a student budget.

 

Applying for Financial Aid (Student Loans)

Law School students who wish to be considered for financial aid (student loans) at Marquette University need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online.

If you hope to secure student loans for the upcoming academic year, we strongly encourage you to submit the FAFSA immediately after January 1, even before knowing the final outcome of your application.

We suggest the following steps to ensure that your financial aid application is processed accurately and in a timely fashion:

  1. Gather your 2013 tax information. Ideally, the FAFSA will be filed based on a completed tax return. We recommend that you file the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, and then update it later with exact figures. All Marquette University Law School students (full-time or part-time) are considered to be independent for financial aid purposes. Therefore, only your income and assets (and those of your spouse, if applicable) will be evaluated to determine whether you qualify for student loans.
  2. Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) online at www.pin.ed.gov. This will serve as your electronic signature on your FAFSA application.
  3. Complete the FAFSA online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Be sure to complete all sections about you, your school plans, and your financial information. Entering students for the upcoming fall semester should not submit the online FAFSA until after January 1 but should do so as soon as possible after that date. Be certain that you select and complete the online FAFSA form for the upcoming academic year.
  4. List Marquette University. Our school code is 003863.
  5. Provide your electronic signature (PIN).
  6. Submit your information.
  7. Print out and keep a copy of your submitted information for your records.

Within two to four weeks of submitting the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) via U.S. Postal Service unless you provided an e-mail address. If you provided an e-mail address you will receive an electronic SAR. Check it for accuracy and follow up on any requests for additional information. If you have special or extraordinary circumstances, notify the Office of Student Financial Aid in writing (Marquette University, Office of Student Financial Aid, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee, WI 53201-1881).

The federal financial aid application process is completely separate from the Law School application process. Although the Marquette University Office of Student Financial Aid will develop an aid award only if the applicant has actually been admitted to the Law School, it is to the student's advantage to have a completed FAFSA on file ready to be reviewed.
