Summer Youth Institute at Marquette Law School

A Summer Youth Institute is being held at Marquette Law School this week.

Students attending the Summer Youth Institute are spending a dynamic week learning about the law, practicing skills, and meeting with attorneys, judges, and law students. They are learning about the American legal system, notable figures in legal history, and the United States Constitution. They are reading United States Supreme Court cases and learning about case analysis and note taking.

Students are also practicing oral advocacy and will be participating in a moot court before a judging panel. They are studying negotiation strategies and engaging in a mock negotiation.

Students will take several field trips. They will tour the federal courthouse and visit Foley & Lardner LLP, Gonzales Saggio & Harlan LLP, and Robert W. Baird & Co. Students will have the opportunity to hear from, and interact with, local lawyers, judges, and law students on these field trips, as well as during panels held at the Law School. They have been paired with mentors from the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association, Johnson Controls, Inc., and the Association of Corporate Counsel Wisconsin Chapter. Students are also gaining perspectives on the college and law school admissions process.

The program is for students who live in the City of Milwaukee, or who go to school in the City of Milwaukee, who are entering 8th, 9th, or 10th grade in the fall.

The Summer Youth Institute is hosted by the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association and Marquette Law School in Collaboration with Just the Beginning Foundation, Johnson Controls, Inc., Kids, Courts & Citizenship, and the Association of Corporate Counsel Wisconsin Chapter. Special thanks to Foley & Lardner LLP, Gonzales Saggio & Harlan LLP, and Robert W. Baird & Co. for their contributions to the Summer Youth Institute program.
