Finals Tips and Reminders for Eckstein Hall

As final exams begin, please keep in mind the following:

  • Traffic and Timely Arrival
    • Be mindful of changes to local traffic patterns, construction, weather, and parking to ensure that you have a timely arrival to Eckstein Hall for final classes, exams, and projects. For those with scheduled final exams, please note that you are required to be in the exam room 20 minutes before the start of the exam.
  • Eckstein Hall Building Hours
    • Starting Friday, April 5, through Thursday, May 9, Eckstein Hall is open from 7 a.m. until 12 a.m. (midnight) 7 days per week. To view the most up-to-date building hours, please click here.
  • MUID Required to Access the Third and Fourth Floors
    • Floors 3 and 4 will be accessible only to the Law School community from Saturday, April 6, through Sunday, August 18. Law students, faculty, and staff will need to use their MUID to gain access to these floors.
  • Classrooms as Study Spaces
    • Classrooms are available as additional study spaces when not in use for final exams and other reservations. Please check all posted signage for availability.
  • Quiet Study Spaces
    • Law students seeking a quiet study environment may use the third and fourth floors. In addition to the Aitken Reading Room, these floors are designated as quiet study areas within Eckstein Hall. If you need to make a phone call or have a conversation, please move to one of the stairwells to conduct business. When working in groups, please use the first or second floor, the Student Organization Suite 342, or reserve a study room.
  • Study Rooms
    • Law students are welcome to reserve study rooms in Eckstein Hall. Click here to check room availability, book a room, and review study room reservation policies. Students can reserve study rooms for up to three hours daily and need to vacate the room once their reservation time ends. If you reserved a room and no longer need it, please cancel the reservation to open the room for other students.
  • Shared Student Kitchen Spaces
    • The student kitchen is located on the first floor in room 159, and there is a small kitchenette on the third floor between the Boden Suite and the Student Organization Suite.
    • The kitchens are self-cleaning kitchens: It is expected that students will clean up. Please be considerate of your classmates by covering your food when using the microwave and cleaning up any spills that might occur.
    • Refrigerators are provided for your use. Please label food and containers with your name. The refrigerators are cleaned out once per month. Unless otherwise communicated, all items in the refrigerator at that time will be disposed of and additional information will be found in Law News.
  • Leaving Items or Food Deliveries at the Welcome Desk
    • Welcome Desk staff cannot hold or deliver items to others. If food is being delivered, please make sure to plan to meet the delivery driver in the lobby as soon as possible. If someone is picking something up from a student, that student will need to meet the person in the lobby to turn over the items.

We thank you for your cooperation in creating a culture of care and respect for others here at Eckstein Hall.

Summer and Post-grad Bloomberg Law, Lexis, and Westlaw Access

Continuing students: You will have automatic, unrestricted access to your Bloomberg Law and Lexis accounts this summer. There is no need to register, and you do not need to limit your use of these two accounts to academic purposes during May through August. (You must limit use of your Lexis account to academic purposes during the regular academic school year.) You will also have access to your Westlaw account this summer, including Practical Law, but you must continue to limit any use of that academic Westlaw account to non-commercial purposes. Non-commercial purposes include coursework, Research Assistant assignments, law review or journal work, moot court research, unpaid non-profit public interest work, clinical work for credit, and internships/externships for credit through the law school. Do not use this account in situations when you are billing a client. You can also continue to use other databases, such as Fastcase and HeinOnline, as you would during the fall and spring semesters.

Graduating students: Your access to Bloomberg Law, Lexis, and Westlaw is tied to the graduation date in your account profiles for each system. Your unrestricted Bloomberg Law access continues for six months after you graduate. Unrestricted access to Lexis continues through December 2024, with an automatic transition to a graduate ID on July 1. Though not automatic, you can opt-in to extend your Westlaw access to continue for several months after graduation. Please make sure you opt-in if you anticipate wanting to take advantage of that access. Watch for an email to your @marquette.edu account in late May or early June from the law library with additional information.

All: Employers or organizations with which you work, volunteer, or intern might require or prefer that you use firm/organization accounts rather than database access through your academic account. Please understand and comply with relevant practices and policies. Importantly, you must not share your Marquette-affiliated account credentials or access with anyone, including classmates or colleagues at work who have their own accounts.

Do you have questions about access to resources or working with these and other databases? Reference assistance and research consultations are available to you throughout the summer and beyond. Just stop at the Reference Desk or contact a reference librarian to get started. We're happy to help!

Summer Youth Institute Seeking Mentors to Coach Student Participants

Summer Youth Institute Seeking Mentors to Coach Student Participants

Each summer, the Law School hosts the Summer Youth Institute (SYI) for rising 8th-, 9th-, and 10th-graders interested in careers in the law. SYI is designed to introduce diverse middle and high school students from the City of Milwaukee to the legal system, expose them to careers in law, and provide them with practical tools for achieving their educational goals. Law students are actively involved as oral argument coaches to help students prepare to present an oral argument on the final day of the program.

The program takes place at Eckstein Hall July 25, 26, and July 29 through August 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (you will only be needed for portions of each day). Mentors will receive $12/hour and complimentary parking under Eckstein Hall while they work.

Sign up now to be a coach/mentor! Review the specific schedule and sign-up online. Past law students consistently remark that the program is inspirational (and fun).

Please contact Hilary DeBlois with any questions.
