Student Liaison Opportunities for State Bar of Wisconsin Sections

The State Bar of Wisconsin Sections are groups of attorneys who practice in a particular area of law. Several sections are currently seeking student liaisons to serve on their section boards. Opportunities available are detailed below. 

As a student liaison, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Attend board meetings, provide brief updates, assist with planning events, and write blog articles.
  • Connect and network with attorneys across Wisconsin.
  • Participate in discussions on current issues and developments in specific practice areas.
  • Gain insight into the governance and operations of the State Bar of Wisconsin.
  • Explore career paths and build relationships that can support your professional goals.

How to Apply: Interested students should submit a statement of interest and resume by October 24 to Kara Olson at kolson@wisbar.org.

Children & the Law Section

This section brings together attorneys with a special interest in laws affecting children, including CHIPS, JIPS, TPR, child welfare, juvenile justice, education law, adoption, and family law. Members:

  • Work to develop and improve laws affecting children.
  • Share resources and information through meetings, programs, publications, and online platforms.

Construction & Public Contract Law Section

This section fosters communication and exchange of ideas among attorneys practicing in construction and public contract law. Members:

  • Present educational seminars on construction and public contract topics.
  • Comment on proposed state legislation.
  • Share information and resources through meetings, programs, and publications.

Dispute Resolution Section

This Section promotes the use of mediation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution methods as alternatives to litigation. Members include attorneys and judges who:

  • Develop and advance dispute resolution practices.
  • Train mediators, arbitrators, and advocates.
  • Provide career support and networking opportunities for practitioners.
  • Establish professional standards and collaborate with other dispute resolution organizations.

Elder Law & Special Needs Section (ELSN)

This section focuses on protecting the rights of older adults and individuals with disabilities. Members provide advice, information, and advocacy on legal issues that affect their lives. The Section’s mission is to develop and improve laws that impact people with disabilities and adults as they age.

Family Law Section

This section monitors family case law and statutes and develops legislation to improve them. Members:

  • Sponsor CLE seminars and organize the Annual Family Law Workshop each August in Door County.
  • Publish the Wisconsin Journal of Family Law (quarterly) and a monthly blog.
  • Participate in committees focused on legislation, communication, case law updates, and program planning.
