Navigating Child Custody with an Abusive Partner: DV Survivors’ Experience in Family Court

- Dr. Schubert is a social scientist who works to use data & research to inform practice & policy to ultimately improve the lives of individuals & families who have been through difficult things. Dr. Schubert received her doctoral degree from the Institute of Child Development at the University of Minnesota where she conducted research focused on families experiencing homelessness, poverty, & parental incarceration. Dr. Schubert current works as the Director of Outcomes & Evaluation at Sojourner Family Peace Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Recent projects have included evaluation of domestic violence advocacy services on survivors’ safety, hope, & well-being, the impact of services for children who have witnessed domestic violence, the integration of universal screening for domestic violence within medical settings, & survivors’ & their children’s experience in family court. Dr. Schubert is a regular expert trainer in domestic violence related topics. Dr. Schubert’s work conducting research & program evaluation focused on families who have experienced domestic violence within a non-profit setting allows application of her highly developed skillset as a rigorous, academically trained social science researcher in a context that is more immediately applicable to practice. Dr. Schubert is passionate about projects that allow data & research to improve practice, policy, & ultimately the lives of survivors & their families.
Students can earn one hour of pro bono time by attending the MVLC Volunteer CLE Series. This free CLE series provides volunteers with in-depth information on some of the most commonly seen issues at the Clinics. These sessions are a great way to enhance your knowledge of the legal issues faced by clients of the MVLC while earning additional pro bono hours.
