Health care is moving at a record pace, and therefore so are health care executives. Top priorities for health care organizations—referred to as the Triple Aim—establish the framework for providing value. These same principles can be applied to a law firm. How do you establish your firm as a valued partner? This presentation will provide an overview of the following components of the Triple Aim, adapted for a law firm: Client Experience, Outcomes, and Affordability as seen through the eyes of a health care executive.

Health care is a highly regulated industry that requires compliance with constantly changing trends, guidelines, laws, and government regulations. Given this climate, health care organizations look to their compliance departments to develop an effective program that mitigates risk and operationalizes compliance and best practices. This presentation will provide an overview of the role of a Chief Compliance Officer and focus on the top five health care compliance issues in 2017.

11:00 to 11:50am, Health Care Litigation: Achieving Best Results Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration. Jane Appleby, L’04, Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Litigation, Aurora Health Care.
Effectively managing litigation risk in a large, integrated health care system requires input from a wide variety of stakeholders, which may include clinical caregivers, medical staff leadership, compliance officers, hospital or clinic administration, and internal representatives of business operations. Involving so many people in coordinating defense strategy is, as the saying goes, a bit like herding cats. Yet input from all of these constituents is not only necessary but also potentially beneficial because it brings to the decision-making process a diversity in expertise and perspectives. Using hypothetical examples loosely based on actual medical malpractice cases, contract disputes, and government investigations, this presentation will focus on strategies for successfully herding those cats with the goal of achieving best results through interdisciplinary collaboration.

The performance of clinical research is highly regulated and constantly changing. Those involved, whether it be Institutional Review Board members, Principal Investigators, or drug and device manufacturers, need to be aware of regulatory changes and trends in the field. This presentation will discuss current hot topics in clinical research including updates to the Common Rule, the new FDA and NIH results reporting requirements, and recent enforcement actions related to clinical research activities.
