Marquette Law School Restorative Justice Initiative Conference 2018:
The Power of Restorative Justice in Healing Trauma in Our Community

We hope you will join us on Friday, November 9, as we explore how trauma impacts our community, looking through the lenses of victims, law enforcement, and those working in the criminal justice system. We will reflect on how restorative justice can be used to begin the healing process. Trauma has a ripple effect, pushing out from each person’s experience into the community as a whole. Those in the criminal justice system, for example, regularly encounter and deal with people whose lives have been shaped and harmed by traumatic events, and they themselves confront, even experience, trauma in their careers. By using the pillars of restorative justice—who was harmed, what was the harm, and what can we do as a community to repair the harm—we will unpack the impact of trauma and consider how the techniques and practices of restorative justice can be used as a pathway to healing for all involved, both in the community and in the criminal justice system.

Friday, November 9

8:30 a.m., Registration & continental breakfast

9 to 4 p.m., The conference introduction by Janine Geske will be followed by a premiere showing of a one-hour film, TORN BY TRAUMA: “Restoring Community One Life at a Time,” focusing on a healing circle featuring law enforcement and community members. A series of panel discussions with comments and reflections will follow the film.

The conference fee is $20 per person and includes continental breakfast and lunch.

• Marquette University students and employees may attend at no charge but must register.
