On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Sports Law Speaker Series presents a discussion with Attorney Rick Verstegen, partner and co-chair of the School Law practice with Boardman Clark. This event will be in conjunction with Professor Anderson's Legal Issues in Youth, High School and Recreational Sports workshop, and focus on how an attorney develops and maintains and educational and school law practice, while also practicing in labor and employment law, employee benefits, construction law and immigration.
Rick is a partner and serves as lead attorney for many educational institutions. For over twenty years, he has advised clients on a wide range of legal issues, including contract negotiations, labor relations and collective bargaining, employment law, business agreements, student affairs, civil rights and Title IX, constitutional law, athletics, technology, immigration, and governance issues. Rick has established close partnerships with clients to address legal issues and to develop creative solutions that support the objectives of the institution. He has represented clients on matters before the Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the Wisconsin Equal Rights Division, the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Additionally, he regularly works with educational institutions on issues related to athletics and sports, including WIAA rule compliance, Title IX audits and training, employment and compensation of coaches, facility use agreements, booster club issues, and student-athlete matters. Prior to entering private practice, he worked in the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department on issues related to NCAA rule compliance.
