Legal Strategies for Fashion Designers’ Iconic Legacies by Professor Felicia Caponigri.

As some of fashion’s most influential designers pass on, a new question is taking center stage: how are their legacies preserved—and who shapes what comes next? Today, designers are not only remembered; they are memorialized through foundations, institutions, and evolving brand structures built to carry their vision forward.

We all plan for our legacies—through wills, trusts, and philanthropy—but are those tools enough for fashion designers whose identities are deeply intertwined with global brands and intellectual property?

In this presentation, Professor Caponigri explores how legal strategies are adapting to meet this moment. From Giorgio Armani’s foundation-driven approach to Virgil Abloh’s legacy stewardship, she examines how wills, trusts, intellectual property, and cultural heritage law are being used to protect and extend iconic creative legacies.
