Biography

JOSEPH A. RANNEY has been an adjunct professor at Marquette Law School since 2000 and has been the Adrian Schoone Fellow for the Study of Wisconsin Legal Institutions since 2014.  He received his B.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1972 and his J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1978. He recently retired from DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C., where he practiced primarily in the areas of commercial and intellectual property law litigation. He is the author of Trusting Nothing to Providence: A History of Wisconsin's Legal System (1999); In the Wake of Slavery: Civil War, Civil Rights and the Reconstruction of Southern Law (2006); Deposition Objections (2010, 5th ed. 2019); Wisconsin and the Shaping of American Law (2017); A Legal History of Mississippi: Race, Class and the Struggle for Opportunity (2019); and numerous articles on American legal history.
