Biography

Nathan Hammons is a Clinical Professor of Law and the Director of the Law and Entrepreneurship Clinic.  The clinic, which Professor Hammons launched in 2015, is an in-house clinical program that provides pro bono legal services to startup businesses and entrepreneurs in southeastern Wisconsin, with a focus on clients who lack access to the traditional legal marketplace. Professor Hammons supervises and mentors law students who participate in the clinic. He is actively involved in Wisconsin's entrepreneurial ecosystem and routinely presents on legal issues impacting new businesses.

Prior to his new position, Professor Hammons was the principal attorney with the Law Office of Nathaniel S. Hammons. He represented entrepreneurs and small businesses, catering to early stage tech startups in the Midwest. Professor Hammons provided legal representation on business formation, governance, contracts, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, risk management, and dispute resolution. Professor Hammons contemporaneously served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Marquette Law School, teaching Civil Pretrial Practice and Contract Drafting.  Professor Hammons also co-founded Simply Contracts LLC, a legal startup. 

Professor Hammons began his legal career in Chicago at the international law firm Sidley Austin LLP, where he represented Fortune 100 clients on product liability matters and mass torts. He later served as associate general counsel for DePaul University, where he counseled internal clients on business issues and disputes, among other things. Before moving to Milwaukee, Professor Hammons served as Appellate Court Attorney for the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Department, in Rochester, New York. 

Professor Hammons received his JD, cum laude, from Boston University School of Law; an MA in philosophy from the Boston University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences; and a BS in zoology, with honors, from the University of Wyoming. Professor Hammons also received a certificate for completing the 40-hour Mediation Skills Training Program at Northwestern University. Professor Hammons is admitted to practice law in Wisconsin and New York.
