Biography

Prof. Paul Anderson is Director of the Sports Law Program and the National Sports Law Institute (NSLI) at Marquette University Law School, where he is also Associate Professor of Law. Prof. Anderson founded the Institute's Sports Law Alumni Association and serves as its Chair. He is a co-faculty advisor to the Marquette Sports Law Review, and faculty advisor to the Sports Law Society, Sports Law Competition Board and all Sports Law Competition teams. As Director he develops and coordinates all sports law events at Marquette Law School, including the Sports Law Speaker and Conversation Series, Career Panels, CLE Seminars, the Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony. He also supervises the Sports Law Certificate program and develops and supervises all Sports Law Internships. Professor Anderson also teaches a variety of courses at Marquette Law School and several in Marquette’s College of Business. Prof. Anderson is also responsible for the NSLI and Sports Law Program website.
Prof. Anderson teaches workshops in Sports Facilities: Legal and Business Issues in Collegiate Athletics, Sports Facilities: Legal and Economic Issues Surrounding Sports Stadiums And Arenas, Legal Issues In Youth, High School, And Recreational Sports, The Impact of Gender Equity Law On Sport, Advanced Legal Writing in Sports Law, Advanced Legal Research in Sports Law, and a Sports Law Research Program course. He has taught Amateur Sports Law, the Regulation of Amateur Sports, and workshops in Amateur Sports Law, Sports Venus, and the Regulation of Athlete Agents and Coaches. He has also guest lectured in various Sports Economics courses in the College of Business Administration.
Prof. Anderson has written several books; Sports Law: A Desktop Handbook (1999), Major League Leases: An Overview of Major League Facility Leases and How They Are Negotiated (w/ Miller) (2001), Introduction to Sports Law (with Spengler, Connaughton, and Baker) (2009 and 2016) and co-edited Sports Law & Regulation (w/ Hylton) (1999), and Sports Betting: Law and Policy (with Blackshaw, Siekmann and Soek) (2011). He has published articles with numerous journals and law reviews including the Marquette Sports Law Journal and Marquette Sports Law Review, Journal of Sports and Social Issues, International Sports Law Review, International Sports Law Journal, Virginia Journal of Sports and the Law, Sports Lawyer, Sports Law Bulletin, Texas Review of Sport and Entertainment Law, Sports, Parks, and Recreation Law Reporter, Contemporary Issues in Sports, and other publications. Prof. Anderson served as an observer for the Uniform Law Commission's Committee on the Revised Uniform Athlete Agents Act and the Study Committee on College Athlete Name, Image, and Likeness Issues.
A former Editor-in-Chief of The Marquette Sports Law Journal, Prof. Anderson is also the former editor now emeritus editor of the Journal of the Legal Aspects of Sport, the co-faculty advisor to the Marquette Sports Law Review, and serves on the Editorial Board for the International Sports Law Journal, and the Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Journal of the Legal Aspects of Sport.
Prof. Anderson has been involved in several consultation projects including work with the San Diego Union-Tribune regarding the Padres and Chargers stadium deals, the NFL, NBC, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Baltimore Orioles, and The Washington Post. Prof. Anderson has been frequently quoted in The Washington Post, Sports Business Journal, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, and USA Today.
Professor Anderson graduated from Marquette University in 1991, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Philosophy, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He continued at Marquette, receiving a Juris Doctorate in 1995. Throughout his tenure, Professor Anderson has won numerous awards including 1995 Joseph E. O'Neill Scholarship in Sports Ethics; 2002 SSLASPA Leadership Award; 2003 Marquette University Law School Sports Law Alumnus of the Year Award; 2005 Sports & Recreation Law Association President's Award
