Sofia Ascorbe

Director of Career Planning

Biography

Director Ascorbe works with students and alumni in their career discernment and professional development. Before her work in student advocacy, she was a staff attorney at Legal Action of Wisconsin, where she represented clients facing elder abuse and housing injustice. She was part of the original team of attorneys that operated Milwaukee's Eviction Defense Project (EDP). In her role with the EDP, she trained hundreds of attorneys across the state on housing law and client counseling, she oversaw volunteer attorneys in their representation of tenants, and she presented at various community centers on renter's rights. For her work with the EDP, she was recognized by the Wisconsin State Bar as a "Legal Innovator" in 2018, and as Wisconsin's "Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year" in 2019.

Director Ascorbe knows the importance of gaining practical experience as a student. During her time at the University of Wisconsin Law School, she advocated for incarcerated individuals through the Wisconsin Innocence Project, spent a summer working with American Family Insurance's corporate in-house legal team, and interned with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's trial division. She is a graduate of Marquette University, where she studied English Literature and Philosophy. Raised in Miami, Florida, she has since fallen in love with lake hikes, the seasons (well, most of them), and Wisconsin community.
