What is the Supervised Fieldwork Program? The law school provides students with for-credit opportunities to intern (through established partner relationships) in the offices of federal, state, and local government agencies or in public interest organizations to assist in providing clients with transactional or litigation services. These one-semester experiences offer students opportunities to develop skills in areas such as drafting and reviewing contracts, legal research and analysis, writing legal documents, and communicating client advice. This fieldwork occurs under the supervision of experienced attorneys.
What are examples of Supervised Fieldwork placements? Opportunities include those with:
- federal governmental agencies such as IRS and United States Attorney’s Office (E.D. Wis.);
- state agencies such as Wisconsin Department of Justice and Wisconsin Department of Instruction (Special Education);
- local governmental organizations such as Milwaukee County: Office of Corporation Counsel, Parks Department, Department of Economic Development and Real Estate Services; Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District; City of Milwaukee, City Attorney's Office, West Allis City Attorney's Office;
- various District Attorney and Public Defender offices;
- direct legal service providers such as Legal Aid Society, Centro Legal, Legal Action of Wisconsin;
- in-house counsel such as Versiti Blood Health, University of Wisconsin System Office of General Counsel, Marquette University Office of the General Counsel, Medical College of Wisconsin Office of Risk Management, Medical College of Wisconsin Office of General Counsel;
- and more possibilities.
Student Practice Rule. Student practice certification under Wisconsin Supreme Court Rule (Chapter) 50 affords students more intense engagement in litigation or client counseling services in some placements.
