Why was the Sports Law program a factor in your decision to attend Marquette? |
|
I have always been torn between pursuing a career in law and sports, but when it came time to declare a major I figured law would be an easier career path. While researching law schools during my junior and senior years in undergrad, I came across a handful of schools that offered sports law courses. Being that I did not have any experience working in sports I decided to first get my Master's in Sports Management and intern with my school's athletic department, so that I could gain experience in the field. Again, when researching law schools I had to decide if I wanted to stay in Louisiana where I would learn the applicable law and greater handle on the Civil Code, or attend Marquette for Sports Law. After attending the Admitted Students Open House and hearing about the program more, I felt attending Marquette would provide the best opportunities for a career in sports. I was also waitlisted at Tulane, one of the only other sports programs worth noting. It was the June Sports Law Recruitment weekend that solidified my decision. I had just heard back from Tulane and was again on the fence because staying in Louisiana would have been easier, but Marquette's Sports Law alumni network is unparalleled and that weekend proved it. If I wanted a career in sports, this is where I needed to be. |

How have you been involved in the program during your time at Marquette (interns, events, law review, competitions, etc.)? |
- I have been active in SLS all three years, President my 3L year. |
Has the program met your expectations? (i.e. did you make the right decision coming to Marquette?) |
The program has exceeded my expectations. Through the Sports Law program, I have made a number of connections, from my classmates, alumni, and other professionals that just want to be involved. It was through these connections I was able to work at NASCAR and even have a handful of informational interviews for other positions. Had I gone to Tulane or some other school, I do not think I would have had near as many meaningful relationships in the Sports Arena. There is no doubt that I made the right decision in choosing to come to Marquette. |
What do you plan to do, either within the Program for the rest of your law school career, AND/OR, after you complete law school? |
I am currently searching for post-graduate job positions in sports and not. Either way, I do plan to continue to be a resource for current and future sports law students. As a professional I look forward to using the skills I learned while completing the Certificate in my practice. |
