On Friday, October 16, 2020, the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School will host its 31st annual fall conference, this year featuring Perspectives of a Sports Law Faculty.  The conference will feature members of the Sports Law Program faculty at Marquette Law School leading discussions and giving presentations on areas within their particular specialty. 

Conference Participants and Topics

Conference participants and the focus of their presentations will be as follows:

  • Professor Jaime McGaver (L’07), Director of Compliance, Marquette University, Adjunct Professor of Law, Marquette University Law School, and member, National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors and Sports Law Alumni Association, & Professor Jessica Kumke (L’08), Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Enrollment Services, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Adjunct Professor of Law, Marquette University Law School, and member, National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors and Sports Law Alumni Association.  Professors McGaver and Kumke teach a workshop on NCAA Governance and Compliance at Marquette University Law School. They will be leading a panel discussion on Issues in College Athletics-Pandemic Edition featuring fellow Sports Law Program alumni -

  • Professor Martin J. Greenberg (L’71), Managing Member, Law Office of Martin J. Greenberg, LLC, Adjunct Professor of Law, Marquette University Law School, member and former chair, National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors, and founder, National Sports Law Institute, who has taught a Workshop on Representing Professional Athletes and Coaches for the better part of the past 4 decades at Marquette.  Professor Greenberg will discuss A Financial Divorce – When a Coach is Terminated Without Cause.
  • Professor Joseph E. Tierney, III (L’66), Shareholder, Meissner Tierney Fisher & Nichols S.C., Adjunct Professor of Law, Marquette University Law School, and member, National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors, and Professor Martin Tierney, partner and group co-leader, employee benefits, Michael Best & Friedrich, LLP, Adjunct Professor of Law, Marquette University Law School, who co-teach a Sports Industry Taxation Issues course at Marquette Law School.  They will discuss The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good: Interstate Taxation of Professional Athletes and Federal Taxation of Player Trades.
  • Professor Jim McKeown, Partner and Member, Antitrust Practice Group, Foley & Lardner LLP, Adjunct Professor of Law, Marquette University Law School, and member, National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors, who co-teaches a Workshop on Sports Industry Governance at Marquette Law School.  Professor McKeown will discuss Hot Topics in the Application of Antitrust Law to Sports. 
  • Professor Matthew Mitten, Executive Director, National Sports Law Institute and LL.M. in Sports Law Program for Foreign Lawyers, Marquette University Law School, who teaches several courses at Marquette Law School, and is a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in Lausanne, Switzerland (serving on the ad hoc Division for the XXI Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia) and the American Arbitration Association’s sports, commercial, and consumer arbitration panels, as well as the UFC and the Ladies Professional Golfers Association anti-doping panels.  Professor Mitten will discuss Olympic Sports Arbitration. 

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

The Conference will begin at 12 pm and end at 5 pm on Friday, October 16, 2020.  The Conference will be online through Microsoft Teams.  Information on attending the conference online, including an invitation to join the event on Microsoft Teams, will be sent to all registered attendees.

CLE CREDIT:

The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School has applied for 5.2 Wisconsin CLE credits for this event.  Attendees interested in receiving CLE credit must remain online for the entire event.
